17 hornet
I was thinking of getting one of these in a cz and reload as apposed to hard to find and expensive 17 hmr. How would it compare to my .22 hornet? It would be mostly used on gofers

I cannot comment on the comparison with the .22 hornet, but i love mine .......... gophers ........ not so much
Lot of fun to shoot, no recoil and cheap to reload.

Have both 17 HH and 22 Hornet, they are great fun. 17HH is a little sharper crack than the 22 Hornet and it moves the 20 grain bullet at 3600 FPS so a little more splat factor on gophers than the 3100 fps 40 grain Vmax from the Hornet. Easy to reload and actually cheaper (I can load 50 17 HH for $14.10/50) than the cost of buying 17 HMR which is now $20/50.
When I run out of my stockpile of cheap HMR, I will switch full time to the 17 HH unless HMR comes down by then.

Dean2 is that 40gr bullet you have clipping along out of your 22 Hornet at 3100 fps been verified by a chronograph. If so that's pretty dang well impressive. I have the Ruger 77-22Hrnt in the long barreled varmint and am giving up on the 46 grain bulk bullets from Winchester, my best groups so far were 37 grain V Max but not run over the chrony yet. Thanks D.H.

Sorry my mistake on the V Max it was a 35 grain not a 37 grain. I was pushing it with 12 grains of WW 296 and the loading manual advertised a velocity of 2950 fps.

Yes those speeds are verified on a Chrono. It is a 40 grain Vmax with a Federal Small pistol primer and 12.6 grains Lil'Gun powder in WW or Privi cases out of a CZ 527. The actual average speed was 3073 fps with a max deviation of 12.6 fps. My Browning Micro Chronos at almost exactly the same speed but my Ruger #1 is only doing 2780 fps with the same load. (All barrels are virtually the same length and 1/16 twist).
Max published load is 13.0 in WW cases and 13.3 in RP cases. A lot of guys don't like Lil'Gun but I have never found anything that will match the velocity and excellent accuracy in the 17 HH, 22 H, 218 Bee and 221 FB. Everything else I have tried s very much slower. I just got some 1680 and 2400 to try and see how it will work.
Factory Hornady 35 grain Vmax loads Chrono at 3150 FPS out of the same CZ. Factory 46 grain Winchester Chrono at 2550 fps out of the CZ with a max deviation of 102 fps.
DO NOT USE SMALL PISTOL PRIMERS IN THE 17 HH OR 221 FB. Work up your loads carefully and do not rely on these results.

Many thanks for sharing your findings Dean, I will try some experimentations based on your data this spring. I have started to use CCI bench rest and Federal bench rest primers in hopes that I would get more consistent ignition. Cheers, David Henry.

I just left the range, and I was shooting my CZ varmint in 17 hornet, and my Cooper in 17 Fireball. My 17 hornet likes the 20 gr v-max in front of n-120. It shoots most accurately with a milder load , which I have yet to chronograph. I may do that tomorrow. I also have a Ruger in 17 Hornet, but the accuracy is not as good, and it will be up for sale soon. I have also owned an Anschutz 1730HB in 22 Hornet that shot exceptionally well, driving the 40gr v-max at just under 3000fps

Both fun, but I tend to prefer the .17 and .20 cal cartridges.

If that is a 17 hornet load, I wouldn't even want to guess at the pressure produced by that load.

I've been looking for a 17 in a CZ as well... 17hmr is just getting wild in price... 22 mag is cheaper again...

There is a reason for that. the pressure is well in excess of what it should be. Even the factory Superformance loads are considerably slower than that, and they are about as fast a load as there is without exceeding the design pressure for the cartridge.

You are a full grain over published max and in those small cases pressure builds very fast. I am surprised you aren't expanding the primer pockets already. I would seriously suggest you back off till you get back down to published max loads or 3600 FPS before something bad happens.

When you do the math, one grain above the max load of ten grains, is a full ten percent above the max load.
To put things in perspective, that is like adding five or six grains to a max load for the 30-06.
