Default Left hand rifle for life time gun

My boy turns 11 this year. He is left eye dominate. He shots archery left handed, BB gun left handed, 22 left handed, shotgun left handed etc. He is very comfortable shooting as a lefty even though he is right handed. He has always been ambidextrous throwing left and right when he was younger and batting left handed forever.

Anyway. He wants a left handed rifle. Tikka makes a left handed gun. Who else makes a left handed rifle? We have about a year to look and get used to his new gun. I'm leaning towards a .270 but I'm not hung up on a particular caliber. Just going to stay away from magnums of course. He's a strong kid who is growing fast. Shoots his great grandpas 12 ga model 59 for trap without complaint.

I don't want this to be a gun he shoots for a couple of years and sells to buy another. I want it to be a gun he will use for life. High quality firearms would be preferred. He wants to put money towards it and I will too of course.

I'm not hung up on brand new firearms either. It's just hard to find left handed used guns.

Just looking for thoughts and opinions.

Build him a nice rem 700. I have a tikka and I love it though. Also a nice Sako would be alright!

Remington
Ruger
Browning
Cooper
Savage
Weatherby
Tikka
Winchester
Sako

....all make left hand rifles, without going custom.

I posted a leftie for sale for a buddy. Beautiful gun...I don't know if he still has it for sale, but look for threads started under my name and give him a call.

See Lefty-Canuck's list for possible candidates... .308/7mm-08/.270 would be good choices, IMO.

They seem to be fairly hard to find in desirable caliber & model combinations these days.

Any wooden-stock rifle in L/H you can acquire should be coveted, and be a "for life" gun.

But hey, I could be biased... Cause I'm a lefty too !

I've owned or currently own the following left hand or ambidextrous rifles.
Remington 700
Remington 788
Ruger 77
Ruger #1
Browning A bolt
Savage 11/111/116
Savage Axis
NEF Handi
Browning BLR
Savage 99
Winchester 94
Winchester 1895
Marlin 336
Marlin 1894
Sako L series
Winchester 70

With exception of the Browning A bolt, and the Savage Axis, I wouldn't shy from any out of the list.
Browning because of their insidious trigger system, and the Axis for the shear cheapness of the whole package.

A lefty tikka in 7-08, top it off with a variable 3-9 by 40 of good quality and your quest is met.

Bought my left handed son a savage 11/111 in 270 cal. Three years ago , he loves it he has grown quite a bit in the last 3 years but shoots this gun very well. He has taken three white tails with it.

I'm in the same boat as your son with the left eye dominant deal . No need to look farther than the Tikka . Accurate , smooth action , good trigger and detach mags make them a good buy .

My son is a lefty as well. He chose a Winchester model 1885 in 6.5X55 for his graduation present. It wouldn't have been my first choice but it is a beautiful classic rifle that is his pride and joy.

Just a suggestion here, at 11 years old he's still got a bit of growing to do. I plan on buying my son a nice rifle for his 16th birthday, but for now I bought him a youth model Savage Axis in .243, and I have a Winchester model 88 in .308 for when he out grows the Axis and before I get him his "Life Time" rifle. Plus by the time he's 16 he can decide which caliber he will prefer, I have a variety of caliber a for him to try out including magnums so that might be one of his options as well. For what it's worth, my son is proud as a peacock about his Savage Axis. I threw a Nikon Monarch on it so he has decent glass on it. I have a Zeiss HD5 3-15 waiting to go on his Life Timer.

I'm in the same boat though, I have a little lefty too.

Another vote on the Savage Trophy Hunter 111 in .270 win. I am a lefty as well and love this gun. Its not a wood stock but in a few more years of abuse I will put a boyds stock on it. I mounted a 4-12x44 Vortex Crossfire 2 on it and now use the stock weaver for my .22lr. The stock glass is fine but i have heard complaints of it breaking on the larger calibers. The vortex is nothing to phone home about but the warranty is unbeatable.

I honestly feel sorry for lefties and even more so for those that are right eye dominant. Man, what a curse.

I am a life long lefty, when I started shooting there were no left hand bolt rifles. Then came Savage, followed by Remington and Weatherby. They are the longest makers of left hand rifles.

Now there are a ton of choices and many of the European and custom ones get missed, Sako, Heym, Sauer, Zastava, Blaser, New Ultra Light Arms, Cooper, Montana Arms, Manlicher, CZ, Barreta, Kreighoff and a bunch more yet.

If I was going to buy an 11 year old a gun he would keep for a lifetime I would order a 7-08 from Melvin Forbes, New Ultra Light Arms, with two stocks. One with a 12.5" length of pull and one with a 14" length of pull. If that is outside the budget, a 7-08 in Rem 700 or Sako, standarg length of pull and order a 12.5" LOP from Boyd's to put on it till he finishes growing.

Here is a lefty that you can factory order a shorter stock. Great made guns.

I just bought a lefty Tikka T3 Hunter (not the lightweight one) in blued/walnut for the reasons the OP posted, if you want to go with one that you keep forever, you can order left handed steyr prohunters through outdoor essentials in smithers BC for about $2500-2800, that will be about as slick as you can get, or maybe a haenel jaeger.

.270 is a good caliber... I went with a 9.3x62, ordered from prophet river, as they can't seem to be found in lefty tikka's anywhere else.

Bought my son the Tikka light in a .270. First year ran the Remington reduced loads and after that full loads. Put a bi-pod on the front just to make it a little heavier and for the long range shots. He loves the gun.

Default 1st gun: buy nice or buy cheap

I'm of two minds. One: get him something that will hold it's value, that he'll cherish and possibly pass down to his own correct-handed child some day, or may help fund another step up when he's older and looking for something different as his own tastes evolve. If he takes care of his toys this might be a way to go.

Two: get cheap but effective that he can cut his teeth on and learn what happens when he neglects it. Or something like a remington SPS that he can save up for to improve as his skills as a shooter improve. Might help to teach the value of money.

My father told me in fewer words 'something given has no value, but something earned is priceless'.

Good question. I was thinking $1500-$2000. We could go a bit more if needed. I'm thinking of selling a gun or two of mine and having him save from his own funds. I want him to have ownership in it. He's already bought most of his own bow and a trampoline from money he's earned. We will likely save until next spring but I want him to be thinking about and planning out what's best now.

Why? They should have a fairly easy time of becoming right handed shooters. I know, I did the opposite!

As to the OP, I just sold a LH Ruger Hawkeye in 270. The new owner another AO'er is very happy with it.
