Default My factory heavy barrel shoots under 3/4" @ 100M all day. Really. Prove it

From the last of the Challenges posted on another site..finally, the thread so many have been waiting for....the factory heavy barrel category.

THE RULES

* Requires five groups with five shots in each group, with no single group exceeding 0.75" measured C-to-C at 100M. (100yds OK for non metric shooters).

* Rifles are restricted to factory rifles with a muzzle diameter of greater than .75" High end models like Cooper, HS Precision, etc are OK as long as they are "out-of-the-box".
* No restrictions on bullet or caliber.
* No modifications other than glass bedding and adjustments to the factory
trigger. No aftermarket stocks...just what was supplied with the factory rifle.
* No restrictions on rests.
Successfull challengers need to post proof pictures including:
- pic of groups with group sizes posted below each group
- close-up of largest group with caliper showing group size under 0.75" unless it is "obvious" all groups meet the criteria. In that case, a close-up of the smallest group.
-pic of the rifle and rest system used to meet the Challenge. Include description stating model and caliber.
NOTE: Nothing may be placed near groups which could potentially hide a "flier".

No whinnig about THE RULES...they are what they are. No posting of "wallet" groups showing the group you shot the day all the planets in perfect allignment. This Challenge requires a clean target panel with five groups only.
THIS IS NOT A CONTEST --- IT IS A CHALLENGE

Think I just heard a pick-up start...must be the owner of one of those Savage Target models OK, I'm off to the Range. Sooner or later, my old LTR will make the cut.

Cool, a game in which I can participate. No, not my truck though. I will give this one a whirl, weather and work co-operating of course.

What...shooters work? Seems like that lifestyle could cut into a guys trigger time. It's all about priorities. Good shooting folks.

My work load is stale sometimes, at which there are no matches or challenges. As soon as it gets busy and I gotta put on the miles, then you issue a challenge that I can fit it, pppffft what's up with that, lol. No excuse though, I can see my 100 yard backstop from the kitchen window. My biggest challenge is wind, I'm souhwest of High River, that should explain it. I can usually give duceman a half hour warning before it gets Blackie way.

Do the 5x5 shot groups need to be consecutive? i.e. cherry picking from a few target panels that were shot during the same day?

Consecutive..not best five out of eight. All must be on the same sheet. This also saves ammo...this AM I tried this challenge and never got past the first group. I've tried it a couple of times for the gunnutz challenge as well and never got beyond 4 groups.

Shoot 5, one group......shoot five, 2nd group....so on to 5 groups, in total only 25 shots in a row.

Finding the load is definitely the trick. Dug out my old LTR and built some loads that worked well 5 yrs ago..no luck...frustrating. Think I need to start over again as I'm thinking my current lot of Varget is different than from the "good old days". Cool weather tweaking may take a bit of time. Best of luck with your 5R.

Well, here we go. Pretty dismal, I was expecting much better than this. I'm thinking that I have to review this load, perhaps a seating depth adjustment. Hornady 55gr Vmax, 18.0gr IMR4198, BR4, Win brass collet neck sized, 0.015" off lands. #1 = 0.775", #2 = 0.736", #3 = 0.810", #4 = 1.070" (yuk), #5 = 0.837"......don't know what happened here, that gun/load was shooting 0.340" ALL DAY LONG

Savage 12FVSS .223Rem, no mods whatsoever, not even bedded. VXIII 6-18

Ohhh, why not.....

Pretty close gitr! I stuggled with my LTR which I was sure would make the grade, but so far...no go. Gitr...looks like you will be posting here again before long. Good shooting.

I know, I just came back from "up there", Wabasca, Calling Lake, Slave, Red Earth, etc. Wow, therebis ablot of snow up there. That little bit you see in my photo is an accumulation at the fence line. Couple more days like this, it'll be gone. My neighbour's 6 yr old boy shot 5 gophers today. I surevwas glad to get home on thursday.

This CHALLENGE was originally posted on Gunnutz by Underthegun on Feb 06, 2013 and reposted to AO on Feb 26 by myself. The Gunnutz thread has over 9K views and 6 different shooters have met the challenge as outlined by Underthegun.
