Default Denatured Alcohol?

Where can I buy this stuff up here? I think it is also called Mentholated Spirits.

I'm wanting it for degreasing firearms and parts.

Thanks.

Try larger marine stores (likely outside Alberta) look for a product from a company called Captain PHAB, marine alcohol.

You can also use methanol (MeOH) or IPA as a degreaser (both are miscible in water) hexane also works well as a degreaser but it is not miscible in water.

That's methanol (MeOH, methyl hydrate)

Denatured alcohol is ethanol with additives that make it undrinkable. Pure ethanol is a controlled substance.

I was looking for it before too. Went into Allied in Blairmore and Kevin stated fondue fuel is actually denatured alcohol. I think you know Kevin probably Chuck. Denatured alcohol is light blue in color and so is the fondue fuel. It worked out well for me.

This is still methanol (CH4O, CH3OH) not denatured ethanol (C2H6O, CH2CH3OH + additives to render it undrinkable).

Both will work as degreasers (but they are different products) as will IPA, 2-propanol, isopropyl alcohol. At work to degrease and strip certain parts clean in the mass spectrometers we use hexane followed by IPA followed by MeOH.

If you want it for doing your duracoat I would reccomend laquer thinner. It gets all the grease and crap off and doesn't leave a residue.

An extremely reputable gunmaker in the US uses methanol instead of Acetone for degreasing before Cerakote. (I have not tried it but I do know acetone disappears rather quickly if you leave the tank uncovered). The last couple items I Cerakoted I used a varsol soak after blasting and dried in the paint oven and it seemed to work very good). You find out right away if there is any oil left on the part with Cerakote. I know this does not answer your question but maybe methanol would be worth trying?

I'm definitely open to suggestions. That is good to know. Thanks.

Hard to beat Acetone or Laquer thinners to de grease. For alcohol , Methyl Hydrate is cheap and east to get at any hardware, drugstore ,paint store. Gas line de-icers have other additives in them .

Chuck,

If this is for your DGS, denatured alcohol or Acetone are recommended, and Acetone is easy to find

Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol also known as ethanol, made unfit for consumption. Just ask your druggist.
