Default Rabbit hunting in Waiparous

Hi all, new hunter here.

I plan on going out to Waiparous next weekend to hunt rabbit but I don't know how many to expect out there. Does anyone have an idea of what is out there?

Also, if anyone wants to join me, this is an open invitation!

Thanks,

M

Be prepared for finding does with unborn babies when you gut them, when you go.

I did it once, turned my stomach, couldn't eat it.

A long time ago, camping in the Prairies, I shot a jackrabbit to eat. That was in the Summer. When I picked her up, there was milk oozing from her nipples. Very sad, will never do that again.
Maybe wait for a few months...

Sportsman Rabbit Rule.

R months are Rabbit huntin' months.
SeptembeR through ApRil

Down south, this is a safety measure against contracting tularemia.
And to avoid killing pregnant does or those with dependant young.
Late April and the does are likely quite "fat".

I went hunting for snowshoe's at the end of March, one of the does I shot had small embryo sacs starting. Holding off now until the fall for sure.

shot a jack rabbit in late spring early summer with pretty "mature" babies . Wasn't the best feeling but made use of the meat and something ate well that night

Thanks for all the posts folks, I'm happy to have this resource and community as a tool to show me how little I know. This is a good thing as it makes for more learning opportunities. I don't think I would be too shocked finding rabbit babies but that doesn't mean I want to. Learning how to hunt has been mostly about how to do things right (or at least better than average) and I appreciate the input on this forum.

So I practiced my long range shooting instead of hunting rabbits. Good 2 inch groups at 200 yards. Was trying to post best picture here but file size far too big.

Thanks again!
