Default crown land shooting illegal?!

monday i drove into waiporous to a side spot where I like to shoot. Brought a couple friends who are both new to shooting. tested some handloads and got my rifle ready for bear. Anyway, we were approached by a weekend camper who said he had been shooting the day before and the police showed up and told them that they cant shoot on crown land. that they have to cease shooting. when asked how old this law was the cops answered " 2 years". I know cops would rather no one shoots guns,.....ever. but this seems extreme. i've never heard of such a law. i'm calling BS. I've seen questionable actions by the police out there. I'm glad they come out. there is so genuine craziness that they out a stop to at times. but they also bother anyone who is shooting.
