Good work.

Getting any animal out of cattle wire can be dicey.

Way to go Chris, very sportsmanlike of you. And some people thinking hunters are just blood thirsty killers. Perfect example of sportsmanship.

I would hope that most if not all of the members here wouldn't think twice about doing the same thing....there was no question that that calf deserved another chance, especially with the coyotes circling and waiting him out.

I don't hunt near farms that much anymore except for a friends place. Great job on saving that elk from certain death. I guess we all could carry some HD wire cutters, going to pick up a nice new one and keep it in my pack when I go to the farm land.

I contacted the farmer last night to let them know. They don't have cattle in there right now but he was glad I freed the animal at the expense of a few stands of fencing. I will be grabbing a leatherman or similar for my pack as well.

a very good deed lefty. being able to free him from barbed wire with no tools must have been tough. hope your hand heals quick.
who knows, maybe the 2 of you will meet again in a couple years.

Lefty, you can't be doing things like that. What if the antis find out? You will ruin all hunters reputations as animal hating, cruel, blood thirsty killers.

All kidding aside that was an awesome thing that you did (and a little crazy too) helping that elk out. Hopefully he heals quickly and the yotes or wolves don't get to him.

My buddies always laugh at me for what I carry in my pack (nickname with some is "Lefty-many-calls")....I bet I looked like a madman rifling through there looking in all my pockets tossing things out trying to find something to get through the wire....I had just enough stuff, and all that I needed!

Nicely done, however remember that tetanus shots need to be re-done every ten years. Barb wire cuts are probably the worst for infections. Keep safe.

Good for you Lefty. I had a similar situation a few years ago when a calf moose got caught in the fence. What made it worse was its mother was right there too. Trying to free the calf while looking over my shoulder to make sure I wasn't going to get run over made the process take twice as long. In the end, I freed the calf and watched it walk away beside its mother without any ill effects. Saw them both a few days later and everything seemed fine.

Good job Lefty , even if his leg is broke , he still has a chance . Certainly more than being hung up . His future was bleak with the dogs already waiting there for supper .

Judging by the number I have been seeing and the pics on my trailcam....I am going to have a busy January cleaning some out.

Here is one from wmu 936 that an old forum member and i saved from the circling yotes. It was pooped from the struggle. we went back to a distance and watched through binos. It stood up after an hour. I think this was in 2006 or 2007
