Default Took an elk, saved an elk...plus/minus = even?

Went for a walk this morning headed in early and spotted a coyote 60 yards ahead. Was crouched down watching him when he took off...took 10 more steps and kicked up an elk....

Then I realize something is wrong...

So I go over to him...talk to him to calm him down (but its an elk so I am sure it only helped me not him )

Root through my pack for a way to free him....find a screw driver used it to pry off the staples to loosen the wire tension, then it broke and cut my hand good...

Then I used my hand saw for trimming shooting lanes to cut the barbed wire on the top of his ankle....somehow this thing managed to wrap his leg up in all 4 strands of wire.

So I get through the last strand and he runs about 6 feet and just chills out....standing on three legs. I decided to let him be as he has been through enough and go on my way. He was pretty scaredayne in shock eyes wide and shaking but he never tried to kick me and never made a peep.

I figure at least he has a fighting chance now, the way he was forget it!....the herd wasn't around but hopefully he catches up with them.

Another interesting day in the woods!

Good on you lefty. Did your good deed of the day. A few years ago my dad and I found a calf moose tangled in barbwire but every time we went close to it the cow would chase us away. Finally ended up cutting the fence about 75' feet away. Poor little bugger wasn't to lively when he was finally free.

From the way he is standing in the pics I bet he broke it.... But like you say his chances are a heck of a lot better now. Hopefully it's not broke and he makes a recovery before getting taken down. Good on you for your willingness to help.

Good on ya, one less easy meal for the yotes. He must of known you where there to help him if he stayed calm, either that or your the elk whisperer. Again great job for helping him out.

Cheers

The leg was twisted but I don't think it was busted...I think it was weak and numb from being hung up....at least that's what I am telling myself

Nice work.

This past spring a good buddy of mine came across a calf moose stuck in a fence. Mama kept her distance as he freed up it's leg from the wire. Once it was free it joined the cow and ran across the pasture and piled into the fence AGAIN. So my buddy trudges across and frees it up again. As far as he knows it made it the rest of the day without getting hung up.

The live picture text report he was sending me that morning kept me entertained!

I'll never forget a similar experience I had hunting with my parents when I was a little gaffer. We came across a cow elk and quickly noticed she had a calf but there was an old oil barrel that had the bolt on style lid stuck on its head. After some thinking dad lassoed the barrel and wrapped the rope around a tree. After a few pokes in the as$ with a stick it popped off. If only we had a camera. But at least mother has a nice old barrel for the garden that's got a hell of a story behind it.

Im sure that elks pretty thankful this thanksgiving

Nice. I did the same thing for a moose several years ago. I had to kick wires off posts to loosen things up and it still was a struggle.

Admittedly if this was a full grown elk I would have been a tad more cautious....that leg was so tightly wrapped cutting the wires was the only option.

I was just happy I could improvise with what I had to do what needed to be done.

The only other way would have been to pick the calf up and toss him over and under a few times....bad news for us both!
