Default Caribou Hunting

I'm looking at doing a trip to Quebec for Caribou next year and the European package has got my attention. Have any of you done this before? Looking for any info/stories good or bad on this.... How hard can it be to find 100's of Caribou....right... Haha

Thanks!

They have both guided and euro style hunts.

We did the euro package in 2009 in Quebec with chambeaux, awesome hunt. There were nine in camp and everyone got two bulls but three in our hunt party. So we had enough guys to pack our meat out and I could cape them so that is why chose no guides. Quebec was a lot of fun for us

For those who have done the euro style, did you find that the quality of bulls available was what you had expected?

Caribou are either there or they are not. A guide will not get you a big caribou just because your being guided. But if you don't know how to judge them, that is where the guide would be handy.
Bulls don't travel any different places than the cows when they are migrating. Chambeaux had 32 hunters that week at various camps and my friend took the biggest bull out of 62 caribou that week and it was shot 80yds behind the cabin so they can be anywhere and nobody knows what is coming over the next hill. If you have a strong back or two and can cape, you don't need a guide. Most likely though there will be a camp manager there to make sure your boat works and you make it back safe each night.

Went caribou hunting with jack Hume adventures last fall. Had a great experience. They offer the plan that has a camp manager and such and is probably a good deal when you have a few guys you know well. We ended up in that deal and our guy was great to have around and helped a ton as we would have still been there doing the gutting and such. My thoughts are if you are paying that kind of money and for a bit more you have a cook and what not, I am not going out in the middle of nowhere to go hunting and come and cook. The caribou are coming in and you need to be in a place to intercept them. You cannot catch up to them. They are quite fun to hunt, the first my son and I got. We shot them and they just stood there, we then got a little bit 'ALBERTAN' and fired a bunch more. Didn't need to, our guide said, hold on boys, they're dead but they don't know it yet. Had a blast though. I would recommend jack Hume and you can pm me if you wish.

If you're looking for a trophy bull, go earlier in the year. It appears the bigger the antler, the quicker they fall off when the weather goes cold

As far as I have read and am by no means a caribou expert. The trophy bull hunts occur in late SEPT and early October. I understand that the bigger bulls are following the cows in the migration. The antlers fall off in late October on the bigger bulls. My best advice is don't treat this a trip that costs money. Treat it as an experience and how much do I need to make this happen. If it takes an extra year of saving do that. You will have a good hunt if you do your homework. I was very apprehensive, but it all worked out. If money is your god, then find something else to do.
