Default advice for 2014 elk season

My son has been working steel in Fort Mac for a couple of years now and wants me to come out and elk hunt with him during the 2014 season.
Looking for advice on which WMU to hunt?
He lives in Edmonton area so I was thinking of heading west from there.
I see that NR can purchase licenses over the counter for elk with more than 3 points, so I was thinking of going this route.
He will be getting a Hunter Host License.
I have always been more of a meat hunter and just want to spend quality time.
Can a NR party hunt on a resident's cow tag?
Thanks

Not all WMU are 3 point some are 6 point so you need to know which WMU you are in and the individual rule.

There are no partner tags for elk with the exception of "youth" tags.

So you can only shoot the animal based on YOUR tags in YOUR pocket with YOUR name on them.

Enjoy the experience when you get here.

LOTS of crown land west of Edmonton. Out by Hinton and Grand Cache are places I'd be looking. Get a bear tag too! Decent deer around Hinton and might see a wolf in your travels too.

Just to add to what others have already said, read the info on individual WMU's and look for ones with the "General" 3 point or better bull elk tag. You should still look into going in on the draw for antlerless elk in the same WMU. In a lot of WMU's, you can get drawn with priority 0

At least, I get drawn every year in the WMU I hunt in around the Grande Prairie Region with a priority 0. I've seen a lot more antlerless elk than bulls and have managed to bag a few so I always put myself in the draw for antlerless. Should you not get drawn, you can still buy the "general" tag

The cost of either tag isn't prohibitive so I would recommend you both get tags. Elk is good eating and if you run into a herd, you could take two home instead of one.

Default Elk

You may want to research that a bit more.

You can only hold 1 elk tag in a calendar year. If you draw the antlerless you won't be able to purchase the general tag.

The OP is a non-resident cannot hold an antlerless elk license.
