270 wsm
I've been pondering the thought of buying a 270 wsm in a tikka t3x just wondering the good and bads of the rifle, and ill be shooting factory ammo as well. Will be hunting deer, moose, elk with this gun. And what is a good factory round
thanks

I have one of the original T-3 rifles in 270 WSM - I picked it up before the price of the T-3 rifles went up, plus it was a new chambering, and I've always been extremely happy with it. Love the trigger, it's my most accurate big game rifle, action is smooth, and it's light to carrier. I wish they made a true short action for it though.
I bought it because 270 WSM seemed like it would be a great open country mulie rifle that would also work for larger critters. I've shot about 10 mulies with it over the years, plus one bull elk, all with 130 gr Barnes TSX bullets. I've never recovered a bullet, even from the elk.
On the down side.... I reload, but factory ammo is pretty pricey. I like the 130 gr bullets, but I've tried 140 gr as well, but they didn't shoot quite as good out of my rifle. The cartridge has a shorter neck, so I think 150 gr bullets might take up a little too much powder capacity, so I never really tried them. Doesn't mean I'm right though.
Also, if you go with the Tikka rifle, don't lose your magazine as they are more expensive than they seem they should be. They are quite durable though.
I like my rifle, I think you would like it too. Of course there are other options, but I would recommend this combo based on my experience. That being said, a 270 WIN would be nice in this rifle as well.

I have had two Tikka T3 LS 270WSM's new since 2004/05 - 2 of the first 10 that were in Canada. Great shooters with factory 140gr AB's and reloads of 140gr AB's. I sold the 2 rifles to my brother inlaw and father-inlaw when I bought a mint Sako m75ss 270WSM in 2012. Plus they were using the rifles more than I was.
Taken elk, moose, deer, bears and wolves at various distances over the years.
I LOVE the caliber. Picked up my nephew one in a Sako A7ss pkg deal about 3 years ago. A hunting buddy bought the Tikka in the camo in 270WSM about 8-10 years ago...its his only rifle for big game.
Another suggestion would be to look at the Sako A7 or the A7 Roughtech Pro. The Pro is a nice rifle.

Ive got a 270wsm but in an X-Bolt lefty. I really like it, nice and light.
Mine seems to shoot 140gr Hornady Interlocks best with IMR4350.
I cant comment to on game performance as I havnt shot an animal with it yet.

I found that the Federal blue box 130 grain loads shot exceptionally well in the T3 chambered for the 270 WSM. The last one I had gave consistent 5/8" three shot groups at 100 yds. Hope the guy that stole it from me appreciates the accuracy. D.H.

Only thing I could add here is that the Tikka's with synthetic stocks in a short-mag calibre tend to kick pretty good.
I shot my hunting partner's 270WSM and it had some good pop vs. my wood stock Browing bolt in 30.06. He also has a Sako in 300WSM and it's a real b*tch for recoil.
Just an FYI if recoil would be a concern.

I have a 270wsm in tikka t3 laminated stainless. Love it! Only thing as mentioned recoil pad is garbage. I have a t3x synthetic 7mm rem mag. Great shooting gun and way better recoil pad.

My main hunting rifle now is a 270wsm, however I have a Winchester model 70 so I can't speak to the T3x. The round it self I wouldn't shy away from. People say ammo is a factor but in reality how many rounds are you shooting a year at an animal? Buy a couple boxes to practice with and keep a box for hunting. I shot 2 elk last year with 130 Core lokts. Never found the bullets and the elk didn't go very far. I'm planning on reloading 140 accubonds for it once I finish up the last few rounds of core lokt I have. Great round! and from what I've heard the T3x is proving to be a great rifle as well.

My son shoots a T3 in 270 WSM. I load 130 grain accubonds with 60 something grains of IMR 4350 (grain or two under max in the Nosler book). He drops stuff like it got struck by the Hammer of Thor!
He has no issues with the recoil. Those factory pads are quite firm, but you could easily swap that out for something more effective.
I have a Sako 75 in this chambering; yet to shoot it, but I am sure I will not be disappointed.
Cheers

well I went with the 270 wsm in a tikka t3 light hunter, and I'm going to try the federal vital shock 150 grain nosler partitions in it. Anybody have any experience with these rounds.
thanks for all your information guys appreciate it and made my choice easier

I shoot a Tikka T3 270 wsm. Love it. With federal blue box it shoots 1/2 moa. Same with Fusion. I just bought some 140 g accubonds yesterday for 39$ lol they where an old box and they forgot to take the old sticker off, when they added the new price on the box.
I love shooting it, I just got it last January for a great deal. Put in a titanium oversized recoil lug. And a limbsaver. Ya, with that old recoil pad it did have a sharp recoil. But with this limbsaver, it feels like my old tikka straight 270 win. Just bought dies for it.
Can't wait for November.

I think the t-3 is a great rifle. I think the 270 WSM is a great round. I do not think it is the best combo. Light rifle, magnum round, not pleasant for some.

Covey Ridge has nailed it. It is an excellent rifle and a good round. I have had a few 270 whizbangs and everything I pointed them at died. But if I were gonna get a magnum, I'd be more inclined to 7 Rem or a 300. Recoil won't really be any different and bullet weight range is greater, and ballistic coefficients are likely gonna be better depending on bullet selection. Easier to sell too.

I am picking up a tikka T3 270wsm this coming week from another A/O member. Has anyone tried Noslers 150gr LRAB in the 270 wsm?

Torn
Bought a Sako 85 Stainless Synthetic in 270WSM for my son for when he grew up. He may never get it.
I reload so that solves one of the issues. Actually is solves the only issue with 270wsm.
Used it a little (had to make sure it would shoot him) and am super
Happy with how it performs. Shot many Deer and a couple Moose. Loves Accubonds. My buddy shoots Barnes tsx very well out of his.
We stocked up on brass so we are laughing.
My 338WM stay home quite a bit. If I find a good deal on a Greywolf in 270wsm I might even ditch the 338.

I can't speak for the T-3 but the 270 WSM is a good round and seems to be real accurate with a wide variety of ammo. I reload mine now with 130 grain Barnes TSX.

I shoot those in my T3 270wsm with 63.8gr RL19 and it gave me a 2.5" 3 shot group at 300 yards.

I was going to but I have ALOT of 140gr AB's so I decided not to till they are all gone. I have a friend that shoots the 150gr XP3's . He may decide to reload with the 150gr LRAB's this winter.

Any idea of velocity with this load? I picked some R19 up this morning at WSS. They actually have quite a good selection of Alliant powder.

About 3000fps on my magneto speed. 3 shots and the last shot the thing flew off the barrel lol didn't tighten it enough I guess.

Tried the new Tikka T3 270wsm out yesterday and to be honest i am not very impressed. I bought Federal brass, weight sorted it and prepped it. Seated the 150gr long range accubonds to 2.893" to fit the mag. This is about 0.075 from the lands.
Got to the range and did the shoot one clean one for the first ten shots then cleaned after every three. Once i had shot the box of factory ammo i gave it a good cleaning and then started on my test loads. Results below.
Reloader 22 60.5gr 2745 fps 1.13" group
Reloader 22 61.5gr 2797 fps 1.66" group
Reloader 22 62.5gr 2860 fps 1.68" group
7828ssc 61gr 2802 fps 1.08" group
7828ssc 62gr 2852 fps 1.34" group
7828ssc 63gr 2924 fps 2.22" group
H1000 65gr 2853 fps 1.25" group
H1000 66gr 2930 fps 1.95" group
H1000 67gr 2983 fps 1.62" group.
So far from what i can see there is no advantage owning a 270wsm over a 270 win if this is all i can get for velocity. The 67 gr load of H1000 is already 3.5gr over noslers published max load but i had no pressure signs and less than .0005 case head expansion.
So where do i go from here? I am going to change the bolt stop and mag so i can seat the bullets closer to the rifling to see if i can get the groups to tighten up and i am going to try 68 and 69gr of H1000 along with Retumbo.

I am just in the process of building a load for my new Sako 270 wsm. I started with 130 grain TTSX's and RL26 powder. Got lots of velocity but could not get any kind of group or pattern to the groups. I changed the coal, more and less, but still wouldn't shoot decent. I abandoned the Barnes (my first attempt at using these) and load 140 grain accubonds with the RL26. I went to the range this morning and bingo. I shot the first 5 loads and hit maximum speed of 3200' +. This was 1.7 grains below listed maximum so no need to shoot the final 3 loads.

Also in load development for my 270 WSM. First combo I tried was H4350 under 140 Accubonds but hit max without the results I wanted. No pressure signs so was tempted to go over max, but with lots of different powder on the bench going to change direction.
Going to try IMR4831 under the 140's and some 130 partitions and see how that goes. As with most mags I load for, expecting best results near max load.
