When did he go missing? We'll keep an eye out when we're out there

I sure hope you find your pup.

When you do please next time keep him on a lanyard of some sort. When you throw all the new scents at a pup, the excitement that instinct brings and few shot gun blasts, you can expect him to stop running two counties over.

I'm not chastising you in anyway, I lost a dog a few years ago, luckily after an hour and a half looking for her only to find her back at the truck. After that a lanyard went on for a time or two and she learned her recall quickly.

Good luck I really hope your dog gets to come home.

Ya it's for a friend that lost it, he is pretty stressed about it.

It's was his first time taking the dog hunting.

I told him I would post on here for him.

Thank you all

Default He should stay in the area until he finds it

Lost dogs in this area seldom survive one night as the coyotes will cut his trail tonight and follow him until they find him. Puppies automatically go into submissive posture when threatened but in the case of coyotes they just tear into them. Shepherds, hounds as well as Irish setters have been run down by a pack and killed in this area.

This is one of those posts that would have been better off posted in a week.

Default Just got back

A few locals still looking. Apparently 2 dogs were lost and the younger one is still missing. Talked to the guy who found the other and turned it over to Pat who returned it to the owner. I used to hunt coyotes all over that area when Mike Farrel was raising sheep west of where Hopewell is now. Figured wind scenter would probably head west so checked all the approaches I have permission on from 797 backing into Hopewell from 797. Even went as far south as Dalemead Lake and worked the side roads back to 797. handed out a few cards to hunters if they didnt know me asking if they had seen the pup and no one had seen him. Still lots of hunters in fields and trucks near Hopewell on the road.
p.s. posting my prior thread in a week would be a week too late, this pup has to be found today.

Not much sense telling the guy he should stay in the area and why after the fact. It is not like a dog lost in a city or town, someone should be out there looking for the pup right now because tomorrow may be too late let alone in a week.

When someone dog is missing the last thing they need to hear is they need to find it before the sun goes down or its dead. As time runs out they start to panic and make rash decisions instead of staying cool and thinking about it.

Ive lost plenty of dogs over the years, some for hours some for over night one for a weekend. Best thing i invested in was a GPS unit, the setter I have now isnt afraid to reach out to a mile in search of birds. Its nice to know where they are.

I really do hope that the pup is found soon, but this is why training/tracking collars are such a good idea.

Agreed with the training and collar requirements. However a 7 month old pup in his first pheasant season should be on a lanyard. His recall may be excellent in the back yard but it’s out the window at a release site.

As long as you have a collar and remote that leads you to him, you won't lose him. And after a small amount of collar training, the collar can be used to recall pretty much any pup in short order in an emergency.

Default Great that it worked out

I am pleasantly surprised by the members on this forum quite frequently. Driving around for over an hour handing out business cards to the many hunters I encountered I met several locals that had read this thread and just headed out to help with the search.

Default lost dog

Great to hear he got his dog back. Guys do not under estimate a dogs ability to get home or back to truck. I once went in 3 directions putting out trapping boxes with my Springer. We were about 5 miles from cabin, she got tired, picked a new cutline and B-lined directly to cabin. No back tracking, I was impressed. Best thing you can do at pheasant site is lay lots of scent trail back to truck, stay late a dog that can find pheasants can follow your tracks to truck.

Default I cant take any credit for finding the dog

Never saw the dog despite looking all around the area. Just alerted everyone hunting to be on the lookout for a black and white setter pup. Several guys from Langdon were still sitting in their trucks on the road when I left to do my final circuit for the area at dinner time. Suspect those guys were prepared to stay until dark 30 in case any of the hunters brought the pup out or the pup returned to the road area. Great that it worked to get the pup back to its owner but I wasn't involved. I suspect the guy with the maritime accent that found the first dog in the ditch by the staging area of the two that were missing may have waited for the younger pup to return to the staging area as well. Either way it is a happy ending!
