Default 204 custom?

I'm considering going to a 204 for all my centerfire varminting....replacing a 221 Fireball, a 17 Rem, a couple 223's and a 22-250....

I'll probably rebarrel my Sako AI 17 to 204 Ruger...

I heard that Ted Gaillard makes a 20 caliber barrel...anyone built a 20 caliber with one of Ted's barrels?

I have not used Ted's barrels, but I hear they are very good. If I was doing a "build", I would make sure it had a 10 or 11 twist. The factory 12 twists are just on the edge of stability for the 40 grainers. I have three 204's and when the time comes, I will re-barrel using a 10 or 11 twist. Let us know what you end up with.

I lke the 204s, but would never be able to give up all my other ones and just go to one CF varmint round. Are you doing the 12 step program first?

P.S. don't own one but have never heard a bad word about Ted's barrels and have heard tons of great stuff about them.

Rick,

You might want to give send me an email or pm. A buddy is working with a wildcat (simple to size - 20/222) 20 Extreme and is having fantastic results.

I won't worry about using Ted's barrels as he stands behind them. Haven't tried his .20 but have used Bartlein, Shilen and Krieger.... the usual mainstreams.

REMBO.... give your head a shake.....lay down for a while......and then come back to Earth. Maybe loose the 17 and one of the 223"s (perhaps to me)...build your 204 and away you go. Every once in a while your as bad as Bathmat and decide one gun is enough. We all know this is nonsense. "More is better".

Are you coming bear huntin with us in May?

I am the buddy that has developed the 20 EXTREME. Here is a picture of some of my best loads.

Here is a picture of my CZ527 20 EXTREME.

RPS International is presently building a Sako 85 and a Rem XR100 in 20 Extreme. Have Kreiger barrels comming for a Sako 75 and a CZ527 Varmint.

Heading for the Dawson gun show this weekend. PM me if you are interested in a 20 EXTREME.

We were busy discussing the 20 EXTREME for most of the two days at Dawson. My best shooting buddy brought his CZ 527 American which had just been converted from 221 FB to 20 EXTREME. He would like to thank RPS International for a job well done as he wound up shooting his first 100 yard group with all five bullets touching. He hardly had time to get over his excitement before shooting two more such groups in his rifle and a few more in mine. Imagine his excitement when he tore apart a number of gophers with the very explosive 32 grain Sierra BK's.

A number of people at the Dawson show had either sold their 204 Rugers or were looking for a load that would shoot in their rifles. This confirmed my suspicions as I was very frustrated trying to find a load that would shoot under 3/4 MOA in my brothers Remington VSSF II. I suspect that there will be at least a few people looking for a 1/3MOA, 20 EXTREME, rifle or re-barrel job.

I have been fortunate enough to have taken somewhere between 400 and 500 gophers with the 20 EXTREME this spring. I plan on taking a few more this weekend so I had better get busy reloading.

So that is what a gopher looks like... its been so long since I pulled a trigger on one...

Maybe we will have to put a 20 extreme into a BR action or custom action with BR stock to see what it can really do... You have some impressive groups there... There is a Barnard with a .223 bolt face sitting on the shelf.

Maybe I won't build a 20ppc..... but then I am getting old and am stubborn....not the sharpest knife in the drawer either. LOL.

I would like to have you screw a 1-7 twist Kreiger or Bartlein 5R barrel on that action. As you know I am a gopher shooter and too old and feeble to get into the BR game. Perhaps someone else out there would be up to the challenge.

Here is a drawing of a 55 Berger VLD seated about 0.050" from the lands. There is room in the neck to push it out to the lands if necessary. I think that velocities up to 3200fps can be achieved in a 26' barrel. Would be awesome if it shoots 0.015" groups like the 35 Berger in my varmint rifle. I have some IMR 8208XBR that should do the trick.

Let me know when you get far enough ahead to join me in a gopher shoot.
