What Ammo for a Ruger 10/22?
I picked up a new Ruger 10/22 a couple of weeks ago and sighted it in for the first time yesterday. I think that I made a mistake by buying the cheap azzed Remington .22 Game Loads (Green box with Yellow Lettering). I zero'd and got great groupings at 25yds, not too bad at 50yds but I was getting 6" groupings at 100 yds. Is that about the best that I can expect with this rifle or will better ammo improve my accuracy? What kind?
I have to admit that I'm a little spoiled with loonie sized groupings from my 17 hmr @ 100yds.

Defintely need some better ammo, around 2-4 inches is pretty common with a 10/22 with decent ammo. My personal favourite in 22lr ammom is Winchester Powerpoints, they strike a good balance between cost and preformance. With my Savage BTVSS I'm geting 1'ish groups at 100 yards. Stay away from the hyper loads though, they tend to be a little inaccurate I personally find.

Mine shoots the remington game load quite well. I would just try a few different brands till you like what you see.

Are you using a 10/22? What kind of group do you get at 100yds?

With a new 10/22 get at least 1 preferably 2 bricks of ammo through the gun before doing much serious testing. As close as I can descibe it is that the action needs to breain. I found my 10/22T changed it's tastes for the first bit.
If I am gopher shooting I like cci mini mags plain plinking federal bulk. but as with all 22's feed it what it likes. The heavy 10/22 stock trigger does not help.
Don't compare a 22 to an hmr it's apples and oranges. A stock standard 10/22 is a good gun, great if you count "fun factor", but super accurate no.

The .22 round flies like a rainbow. Its a challenge to get a good group, at least for me at 100. And yes I am spoiled with the HMR.
The problem that I had with my 10-22 was failure to eject and feeds. I have some winchester stuff from Wally world that works ok.

Things I would recommend even for a stock 10/22;
1. A target hammer to reduce the pull on that lawyer proof trigger
2. Bolt buffer it's a plastic/hard rubber pin that replaces the one in the back that the bolt runs into. A buddies gun those holes are oval not round, it also acts like a shock absorber reducing vibrations that get passed to the scope.
3. If it is a wood stock and maybe the plastic stock(never used one personally) bedding. It's an easy job RFC has the procedure.
I just ordered the parts for the hammer and buffer for my kids gun cost 60$ ish, it should show up shortly.
Optionals
extended mag release
one handed bolt release (can mod the stock one with a dremmel tool)

I agree with these 2 ideas. A VQ target hammer is an easy install and cuts the trigger pull in half. You may also want to consider a VQ extractor while you are at it...its another $10-15 and I have never had a FTE since i put it in.
I have had good service from rimfiresports.com and I think they still offer free shipping to Canada.
As far as ammo goes mine has always preferred CCI mini-mags and Fed HP's. Try lots of different ammo and stock-up on the one it likes best.

I think Sylvestre Source for Sports in Bonnyville imports VQ parts, I bought a while rifle from them and a guy I know is trying to get a trigger from them.

These guys also have quite a bit of aftermarket 10/22 stuff. Just ordered a VQ hammer, bolt buffer and auto bolt release. Just started to "play" with my 10/22 but after reading quite a bit about them, it seems the only way to really improve the accuracy is with some of the aftermarket barrels. A lot of the barrels are probably worth more than you paid for the whole gun though. http://www.hawktecharms.com/

i bought four or five boxes of various kinds from spammo to hi perf target stuff.
at the end of the summer one brand stood out above the rest.
for me federal hi power was the the stuff.($3.00 box)
as a rule, i found hi perf stuff to be better all round performer. consistant from box to box, cleaner ejection, accurate, no failed rounds and of course graphic down range results.

Try adjusting the tension on the main screw. Bring it out and start shooting into paper targets and slowly tighten after each each 5 rounds. It will eventually hit a sweet spot. Generally, you can make almost any ammo shoot reasonably well. Once set, you're good for that lot of ammo.
