Default shoot pigeons but not swallows

We encourage the barn swallows since they eat their weight in insects each day. Federal birds so shooting one could cost you your hunting license for a few years and a big fine.

I know they eat bugs, but no matter what I do I can't keep them from nesting and crapping on everything (skidoo, tent trailer etc)..

I didn't know it was illegl to shoot them..

I prefer swallows to mosquitos.

Where are you located. I could use some pigeons.

Shooting Barn Swallows is illegal, yes...but not Pigeons.

Quote:
All birds are protected except the following: Starlings, Crows, Pigeons,
House (English) Sparrows, Magpies, Blackbirds, Common Grackles,
Brown-headed Cowbirds, Ravens (hunted on private land by residents)
and any other birds for which an open season has been declared by the
regulations as indicated in this summary.
I wouldn't be surprised if the pigeons were worth breasting and eating.

Shoot all the pigeons you wish but swallows are protected to the best of my knowledge.

Assuming you are talking about Barn Swallows (orange-red breast?) that build little mud nests inside your buildings?

You can try knocking down their nests then applying grease along whatever beam etc that they are building on. Their mud won't stick there and they will seek other places. If it is a place you don't want ugly gobs of grease you can try white Lubriplate grease as it doesn't show quite as bad.

Now if you mean English Sparrows then you can kill all of those you like as they are not a native species and are actually very detrimental to our native Alberta birds.
Regards,
Dave.

If the pigeons are roosting in your buildings and you want to eat a few of the pigeons... go to their roost at night with a bright flashlight. You can pick them off the roost easily. Wring them and in the bag. When the birds are roosting they are calm. Then they aren't shot up either. Now if you could find their nests and take the squab ... then you have a meal fit for kings.

thanks for the responses.

As to the offers to shoot the pigeons. I have a PAL, guns and the time. But unfortunately, there is not many pgeons. The problems is more the swallows than anything.

I've knocked down all the swallow nests. I guess it will be a weekly duty.

Better get a permit before you destroy anymore nests or at least not post that you are doing it online.

Some chicken mesh wire. It would maybe be better to wire mesh the areas the swallows are trying to use. Tearing down nests won't help long term.

Or maybe let the swallows do their thing. Take some nice pics instead. Then enter a 5K wild bird photo contest and win..

I didn't know. thanks for the info.

Looks like I'll have to learn to live with them.

I've had them nest in my sheds since I've lived here. Only this year it seems like there is 20x the nests and birds. Thats not a exageration either. I don't know why there is so many this year.

I love my swallows.

I even take the cowbird, or whoevers eggs out of their nests.

I look upon swallows like a young conservative family who always have to pay for someone else. Therefore, I give the little conservative birds a hand up in removing non specific eggs.

I look upon pigeons as liberals, always freeloading on others work.

The pigeons no longer land on my farm. I could care less to why they don't.

Maybe the little red hen bought a gun and did not like poop on her house.

Please do not send PMs saying that I am anti diversity.

wD-40 spray all yer rafters with it or moth balls
I've heard that the
problem with moth balls is holding their tiny legs apart while you castrate them

If you want the pigeons gone, get and owl decoy. Next get some tarps and keep the swallows.

Why not get some real raptors to nest around the around the yard?

Mind you, there might be more than the pigeons missing.

"Fluffy" "Fluffy" where are you?

Maybe we better stick with the decoy.
