Dropped two heads off, same day, same freezer in late November. WT Buck came back negative over 2 weeks ago. No word on the MD Buck yet.

Last Thursday I spoke with the with the folks conducting the testing. They are just trying to finish up the freezers within the next week or two and then they will be starting on the Wainwright submissions. They received a significant increase in head submissions this year which means either there was more deer harvested or folks are finally getting the message not to mess around with CWD.

I sure hope that the lag in response times from this year helps them plan a little more resources for next year. Given the apparent impossibility to kill the prions if a deer is positive, the lag in response times is not helping to contain the CWD to the affected zones.

We submitted heads to the same freezer on the same day...took 3 weeks for one head and 7 weeks for the other. Both were does and around the same size and neither was shot in the head. Not sure why there would have been such a discrepancy between the 2.

Default CWD Response

I submitted 2 heads in mid November.
One tested negative and I received that response within about 2 weeks. The 2nd head tested positive and it took about 4 weeks before I heard from them. I was told if the preliminary test shows a non-negative (inconclusive) result then the sample is sent to CFIA in Ottawa for further testing and confirmation. This results in the extra time required to advise us of the positive results.

In the past my understanding was they would advise you if the original test was inconclusive and the sample was being forwarded for further testing. They have now stopped making the first call and just contact you once the final result is in. This seems reasonable since in the past the 1st call provided no info to you anyway and was a waste of resources.

This makes sense on the wait time between the 2. Thanks for providing the context.

[LEFT]So called Edmonton still have 1000 heads to test and another wait time of 2 to 3 weeks. There is a 20 % increase of heads submitted from last year. Need to defrost the freezer, guess I need to start eating.

Oops, jumped the gun. Didn’t see update on another post. I was getting impatience.

Finally got my results in an email... Unsuitable.
So now what? I have heard that you can get another tag for the upcoming year if your deer is Positive for CWD.
Where do I find the info to start that process?
Thanks,
T.J.

Unsuitable means they weren't able to test your deer probably due to damage not that it was positive. I could be wrong but don't think you get another tag for that.

Still waiting on my two Wainwright deer sounds like its going to be a little while yet.

Thanks Freerider, I have placed another call to see why it is unsuitable.
She said they likely couldn't find the right tissue sample due to possibly shot in the head (not the case as it was a single heart shot). She is going to look into it as it still leaves me wondering if I can consume it or not...
anyone else ever get an unsuitable result? If so, what were you told to do with the meat?
Of course it is a male mule deer shot in the heart of the CWD zones so she said the odds are higher for sure that it would be positive but will call me back after she does some research...
So the wait continues...

I am not sure what the rules are if you allowed to throw it out. Yes CWD numbers are going up but the odds are still low. To date no transmission to humans and south of the border some guys are eating a tonne of positive deer. Personally not a chance I would eat a positive deer unsuitable I would keep but have to make that call yourself.

Update:
I just spoke to F&W again. they said that the 2 tissue samples they needed for testing were not in the head, possibly from freezing, then thawing which did happen as I took it to my taxidermist. So it is unsuitable, meaning they cant tell me if its positive or negative.
Ok, I get that. But when I asked what I was supposed to do now with deer meat that I don't know if its positive or not, she said we are not a food inspection agency so I cant comment. But if I throw it out, I could be charged with wasting wild meat. I said that there is too much gray area. I said, would you keep it and eat it, she said not a chance...
Gotta love the govt...
More phone calls will be placed I guess to make sure my ass is covered as I will not feed it too my kids as there is a chance it is positive...
Grrrrrrrr...

Just got my first season Wainwright results back today, negative!! Got my other three deer tested even thought they weren't shot in a CWD zone and got those results much earlier.

It does take a while, hoping they can improve things in the future.

I'm curious, if you get a positive and you're encouraged to dispose of the meat are you offered another tag? Or is it just a suck it up until next season thing?

Do moose get it or just wt and md?
