I never bothered to fix the gasp on my shed at the lake the last time the scum bags broke in .
I leave nothing there now that is worth stealing , it all comes back every trip.

I’ve had a few minnow traps taken over the years, then I just started throwing them into the creek without a tie rope. When you return bring a piece of rope with a large treble hook on the end, cast it out and retrieve your trap. Also works with a long pole Or your fishing rod. Good luck!

Is it really. I guess if the bar keeps getting lower and lower. we'll see more and more of this stuff.
Why was it different years ago? what has changed?
It IS strange how people's morality seems to have changed almost overnight. Or rather, that there are commonly more immoral people than there were just a short time ago...drugs? Parents who don't care or don't know how to raise kids properly? Parents who don't have time for their kids because they're just too busy trying to make a living? These things aren't new. Is it TV or the internet? Revolving door justice? Economic downturn? Indifferent teachers? Over extended police resources? Or just simply more people, so more bad people? The population of Alberta has roughly tripled since 1972.
The more common crime becomes, the more we just shrug it off. An endless cycle, forever widening.
It's not that things have changed that is alarming, but that things will never get better.

No harsh immediate actions ... A long walk home after a stern "talking" by someone.....but that would be too harsh so a stint with someone talking about problems to you....oh the world is against me....so I took the minnow trap....sold it for a quick fix.....

Yep you guys are right.
I own a lot of junk just so I won’t be upset if it goes missing.

How sad is that.

Plus cars, boats, quads. Even the wallet in your pocket is considered fair game to thieves, and thieves are everywhere.

For much of history parents taught their children that theft and lying was wrong and they enhanced that lesson with a belt or willow stick.

Then some childless highly educated professional decided that one extreme case of abuse was representative of all parental applied punishment.
So it became criminal for us to teach our children not to lie, cheat or steal.

And this is where that took us.

The problem with highly educated professionals is that when they get it wrong thay can and often do harm a whole generation or even a whole civilization.
Worse yet, they prevent us from attempting any remedy.

As disturbing as it is to loose a minnow trap to a thief, can you imagine loosing two vehicles in one year, to thieves.

That is what has happened to a young man just starting his working career.

This young man is a neighbors son. Both father and son are avid hunters. The father is also a former AO member. And he is one one of the most knowledgeable hunters I know, plus a stand up guy and top notch neighbor.

Both vehicles were stolen from a residence in Red Deer.

I'm not saying that theft is unheard of in my town. There seems to be a lot of bikes stolen, and some car break-ins, but I can honestly say that I've never had anything stolen from me, and I'm in my senior years with decades of hunting & fishing outings. I've got lots of easily accessible things like kayaks, game carts, wheel-barrows, shovels and tools and the like, unsecured, in the yard, often leave our vehicles unlocked, only lock up the house at night - the door is ajar all day during the summer for the dog to come & go. I've even had Amazon packages left by the front door for days - if the next-door neighbour didn't notice and take them in for me. Of course, we live in a small cul-de-sac, where 1/2 dozen houses are all facing each other, and so we all know each other and we're all watching the front of each other's houses - but all of our rear yards are backed by the woods & a footpath. Our town has an active community facebook page, where people are constantly reuniting found items with owners.

Although we take basic precautions, and my firearms are very well secured in a Fort Knox man-cave, theft isn't front-of-mind for us.

Actually, it just occurred to be, I've had 2 packages from Cabelas, make it as far as the local post office, where I got the notice in my box to go town and pick them up - and when I got there, they'd mysteriously disappeared from the Canada Post local outlet. Cabelas replaced the items promptly.

Well I got a pleasant surprise today , a text with a picture of my minnow trap saying he fished it out of Chicakoo lake, found my info on the inside and contacted me. I went and got it even had the rope I used to tie it to the bank, but it was cut.
When I got there he said he didn't know where is kids found it His wife found my info inside it . I told him I set it under the bridge at Devils lake. He then said " oh maybe they found it there, we go kayaking there sometimes" Seemed a bit weird but I held my tongue thanked him for getting it back to me and left.
