Default Honda TRX420

Any opinions on the newer versions of this quad ? Checking prices I was surprised to find the TRX420 is cheaper than most other brands of comparable size....sometimes by a lot. I can get one (2018) right now for 7 out the door.

My buddy has one, he put bigger tires and a clutch kit and all that crap. But it’s been a great quad, for the size and power ratio, can’t go wrong in my opinion. It doesn’t weigh 800 lbs and over powered, that’s when you start breaking stuff. Be a great all around quad.

That's true the Honda has no where near the power of that 570 Polaris. And it also suffers from 3 wheel drive syndrome (I could be wrong on that) My Honda Pioneer 500 has 3 wheel drive and I was reminded yesterday of it's limitations and lack of power compared to my Polaris Ranger 570.

Sounds like lots of Polaris fans out there. Thats good to know, thanks. I've always thought of Polaris as the least reliable, but I've never owned one.

I had a 2014 420 with EPS. Overall it is exactly what you would expect. Decent power, nice size, and as reliable as they come. I was not a very demanding rider so it was perfect for me.

go with the fm model and put mud lites or another decent tire on it and dont look back. mines a 2011 with just over 7000 k on it mainly from 2 teen age boys. enough said. so far ive done oil changes, a wheel bearing, and a front axle instead of just doing the boot.

Pretty dependable and able little quad. Lots of people who had the 500 Rubicon switched and tell me it can do everything the 500 did but is lighter and more nimble.

Thanks for all the advice. Turns out I was quoted the wrong price from the dealer. The Honda TRX420 real price was $9300 out the door. ( with winch) I thought that was a little high when I compared it with Yamaha. The dealer I was talking to also sells Can Am, and turns out they have a very aggressive commercial program. I ended up getting the Can Am 450 for 8K out the door. Hopefully I wont regret trying to keep that extra $1300 in my pocket. Never owned a Can Am before so time will tell.

agree the 420 is a good machine, not heavy like the 500cc models. reminds of the old 300 Hondas cant kill them.

To bad you didn’t have that quote in writing! You’d be laughing and someone would be fired possibly.

Don’t see how the can am can be a bad move. Lighter then their big bore quads and half the power so things shouldn’t break down to fast.

No they are not that bad. Reliability should be close between the can am and Honda with good maintenance in my experience. Current can am of mine has been bullet proof for me. Totally different type of machine though to me. The Honda is more of a slow and reliable type than good performance and comfort, the can am should be right in the middle and good all round. You made a good choice, can’t go wrong with either in my book.

Well good luck but you will see over a ten year period that you should have gone the Honda route....got mine for 15 and 16 years, older Honda fourtrax and ride them almost everyday during this timeframe most guys/gals I know have been through various other makes and models and come full circle to settle on a Honda. Depends what you do but I tell ya if you sink it and let it sit stuck for six hours etc until you can get out they hate water for any length of time but the ol'honda fires up and plunk her in first gear (fm) and she starts to move...softer plastic fender Clair's when minus 20 and you jam it in tree's bend and don't snap, the beauty of having a pull start if out in moose camp and battery dies...you will see over the long haul.
Good luck though....

Hopefully they've improved since we dumped

You guys have been a ton of help, thanks a bunch. Since I didnt pick the Can Am up yesterday, I was able to call the dealer and switch the paperwork back to the Honda. My original feelings were that the Hondas were the best option for me since I operate in a real remote area and reliability means more than anything else. So it will cost me a bit more but I feel better about the decision.

I and my 96 Honda salute you.

This is the locker that I installed to stop that
irritating noise of "3 wheel drive, 3 wheel drive"
from certain quaders.

I think u made the right choice by switching back.
If possible go with the FM model, complete bullet proof.

Good move, I have a trx350 with 12,000km, it has the electric shift on it, that is the only thing that has given me any trouble. I would buy the same machine again, but would get the foot shift, just simpler. Looks just like 35 Whelen's

Same for me,,, lots of little Ondas over the years,,, Frugal to buy and they run forever so long as the oil gets changed.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/6vf33ryUJJVaeFVPA

I just rapped up year 4 on the tracks,,, lots of trips to Northern Alberta and BC,,, yes quads with tracks won't go where sleds go,,, but they sure work good in the lower valleys.

👍
