Factory Light Rifle in .204 Ruger recommendations???
$1200 Budget.
Under 6.5 lbs. and under.

Might want to look at he Rem 700 SPS. They don't make it any more but they used to come in a light barrel version. Now the lightest is the light varmint contour. The Light Varmint weighs about 7.5 Lbs. The sporter barrel version I have isn't likely 6.5 lbs but it will be under 7 by a hair. Though it is a RH gun, Mine is currently in a Devcon bedded Boyds LH right bolt thumbhole stock and with a 6x24 scope it is still only about 8 Lbs. With the factory right hand stock and a lighter scope it would make a pretty light walking rig. This gun is a tack driver so nothing wrong with the lighter barrel versions accuracy wise.


I could be talked into selling this one.

i do believe cz makes synthetic stock models, just find one of those perhaps, true scaled micro action, makes for a slick handling little rifle

i was that way for a long time, stainless synthetic only, partly why i sold the little .204, dumb decision

i'm ambidextrous now, it's tough to beat the cz american for a walking coyote calling rig, everything else will feel pretty big by comparison, might be able to get howa mini action in .204 from prophet river or p&d also, most of my rifles come quick from prophet river, never looked at howa mini in .204 but have played with them in 6.5 grendel, i'll take the cz or ruger over the howa every day, good metal but everything but the barreled action is garbage

Ever have a Tikka. I had the T3- Varminter And loved it. Traded for a 700 Rem Heavy barrel and it was awesome too. Both heavy and still move enough that I was never able to see my shots hit like many ppl say they can with a .204. But the tikka lite really has my attention. If anyone has had both Tikka and CZ I’d love your input.

I've had a few 204 rugers. In my opinion the cz had the nicest trigger and was one of the most accurate 204s I've ever had. Action was very nice and it was a dream to shoot and carry. I only sold it because I also prefer synthetic and stainless. I used a t3 varmint last year extremly accurate great trigger etc but heavy to carry through the bush. I picked up a t3x lite in stainless recently, trigger isnt quite as nice as the varmint but it balances and handles real well havent shot much but it shows a lot off promise.

I’d be curious to know how the lite groups compared to the Cz. Anything in the 3/4moa works for me. Hoping I can get it to shot 40 gr Vmax. Light and accurate is what I want. 👍

So far I've only sighted it in with the same loads I use in my t3 varmint. The 32gr zmax were under half inch and the 40gr vmax were a little under a inch. I imagine groups will tighten up considerably with load development

I see recommendations for CZs and justly so, they are great rifles.
Good luck to you in finding one in 204.
Tikka is light and shoots every bit as good or better than a CZ and you can still get one in Alberta.
If you really feel the need to have a nicer stock, order one from Boyds and you will still be money ahead,

i'd vote for a tikka also but not the varmint for a walking predator calling rig, way too big and heavy, i tried two of the, they shot 39 gr federal factory blitzkings into an inch at my zero of 250 yards and nothing to do 2-2.5" groups at 500-520 yards

just get the t3 lite version for calling, but the action and overall rifle will not be as trim and compact and slick handling feeling as the cz, i have owned two tikka t3 lites, two t3 varmints and two cz 527 americans...so take for what it's worth, if you need stainless syn, you should look at tikka t3 lite then

One I got everything on, it is still a hair over 10 lbs but still 3 lbs lighter than the old heavy barrel Varminter. My scope is 27ounces so that makes it a little heavier. Love it so far.

Always been a Tikka fan. I’ve got a cz527 in 17Hornet, walnut stock. Gorgeous gun to look at, but really lacking in just about every other aspect. Trigger is good once you get it adjusted. Consistently shoots everything to 1.5” until you seat the bullet .010 off the lands and then it’s cloverleaf but you can’t use the mag then. Bolt feels like it’s riding in gravel. But it is beautiful to look at!

CZ actions wear in NOT out.....

.204 needs a 24" barrel IMHO... to take advantage of the little power house.

I’ve had a few 204’s including a Remington and Tikka. The rifle I finally settled on is a a Savage 16 Stainless, just like the fit and the way it shoots. It’s the only Savage rifle I own. With 40 grain bullets it almost puts them in the same hole, and it counts for a truckload or 2 of coyotes and foxes every winter.

such a true statement, didn't really want to like cz's but the damn things persistently grow on you over time to where they go beyond their reputation for accuracy in many ways

Now you just need to accessorize: a light trigger spring to get your pull in the 1.5 lb range and you are good to go.

Ya you gotta get a leupold 3.5-10x40 cds-zl at 12.5 oz (listed at 13.1 oz but i have one and it shows 12.5 oz on my scale) on that rifle in some talley lightweight rings (2.5 oz), you'll still shoot lights out to 500 plus and you'll be around 7 1/4 lbs all up...much easier to one hand while swiveling on the shooting sticks for those speedy little flea bitten mongrels.

from recollection my tikka's shot the 32/40 gr hornady both sub-moa easy, i think the preference was tighter with the 40's, my cz was the other way around, it shot 32's about 1/2-3/4 and the 40's 1-1 1/4 moa, so i'd expect you'll see your 3/4 moa with the 40's pretty easy, it's too bad federal doesn't still load the 39 gr sierra blitzkings, it was THEE load for factory ammo, it was awesome accurate and killing and fought the wind well

I shoot the 40 gr. V-Max with Tac powder...Primers made a huge difference in my group sizes...worth a try.

too light for me, used to roll around 2.0 but now i find i'm happier with 2.5 give or take 1/4 lb, for hunting or range, sometimes have a light glove on and need some resistance
