Default Cleaning bear spray from clothes/pac...

Well it finally happened. No i wasn't attacked by a bear and got covered in bear spray while defending myself, the dreaded fear that is on all our minds when it comes to bear spray finally happened. Backpack popped the clip of when i sat on the quad and pushed the button. Big cloud of orange all down my leg. After a while of pain from the cloud hitting my face my attention moved to my gear. No time for tears when my gear is covered in the stuff. Currently all the gear affected from the spray (pants, jacket, gloves, belt, backpack, hat etc) are soaking in cold water with some laundry soap. Im hoping this will get ride of the spray. If it doesn't any advise or suggestions for removing the smell? My biggest concern is my backpack as i cant throw it in the laundry machine for a few cycle as i can for the rest of my affected gear. Im considering one of the ozone generators to eliminate the smell? Would this be a good idea? Any advice or input is appreciated

Thanks

Don’t ask how I figured this out. And it’s can be rather awkward buying in bulk. Try Vagisil. Have used that to remove lots of awful stench including skunk spray from clothing.

So after the previous treatment, were your clothes less itchy?

This thread delivers!

Seriously, I believe the spray due to the extract has a high oil content. Use a good water soluble degreaser to pretreat. I recommend Zep, which is cheap and does not leave an odour. Wash in hot water with Freshex scent free or Tide Free and Gentle, and borax which is also a laundry booster and natural deodorizer. Oxyclean (?) works too.

Extra rinse, dry with a scent free softener like Bounce Free and Gentle, or a scent killer sheet.

Clothes will be scent free, clean, and ready to hunt, or can be further sprayed with a hunting odor eliminator with or without cover scent.

Agreed!

My former employer had that happen while mountain biking around Hinton - part of the trail could not be traveled by bike, so he had to carry his bike up that stretch.

While he had his bike over his shoulder, the clip of his bear spray canister came off, and the spray essentially fired right down his back.

He's a tough fellow, but I swear there were tears in his eyes when he told me the story.

He did use a bit of water from his water bottle to wipe down immediately afterwards, but that isn't really effective. At least it thinned down the coverage a bit. He said that the burning lasted for quite a while. I can imagine that the fiery heat moved around a bit with his sweat as well.

From someone who has been pepper sprayed 7 times.... the best option I have found is to go to Dollar Tree and get a few bottles of LA's Totally Awesome for $1.25 each. Pour the concentrated solution directly onto the effected areas and allow to soak for 15 to 20 minutes then wash with standard laundry detergent. Repeat as necessary. Once you can press a clean tissue onto the fabric without an orange residue being left on the tissue your done. Let the fabric air outside for a few days if possible. Run a bottle of LA Totally Awesome through your washing machine to remove any residue before doing regular laundry.

It is the oils in the pepper spray that hold the capsicum powder onto the "target", once the oils are dissolved the capsicum is easily removed.

Well, my father was a sheep guide for many years. Story goes. They had a hunter in camp one time forgot to roll his bedroll. Pack rat came in as they were out of camp for a few days and decided to destroy the bed roll with urine. When they came back they were wondering how they could clean this, at that point the cook said “eh, I got some Vagisil, both my father and the hunter looked at one another. Shrugged their shoulders and gave it a whirl and it worked. Last fall I had a skunk problem, ended up spraying my hockey bag, I very humbly went to shoppers and picked up a few bottles. Yea very awkward, but brought it home and it worked once again.

Probably not the story you fellas were thinking and I’m glad it wasn’t. Hope you got the smell taken care of.

It's a great story, very helpful.

But it got me to wondering, if it worked on Pack rat urine do you think it would work for a stinky beaver.

Just wash everything in the laundry by itself. I've been sprayed numerous times and spray recruits numerous times a year. It's nothing special, just capcicum oils and suspending agent.
