No....I dont know if there would be too many this far upstream of the NSR. Possibly closer to Battleford they may be in the Battle but 30+ years of fishing it from the dam to the sask border I've never seen one.

Battle river fall bite
Hit the river tonight. Beautiful evening to be out, and the walleye were biting to boot. Hope everyone is enjoying this great fall weather.

I know a spot where every cast catches a sauger, at least this was when I was 18 so some ago, on the NSR, Ill have to try that spot again before freeze up if I have time.

Sweet.
Unfortunately my year is over.
Snow on the hill shut it down early and now the river is closed until next May.
There are no lakes close enough to fish so we are done for this year.

Fall is great for Goldeye in September as they bunch up to migrate downstream for the winter. It’s funny how fishing in the NSR...there is a day when you go from catching lots of walleye to catching tons of goldeye. I always watched for mooneye but at the time I wasn’t fly fishing as much. Using jigs, spoons, spinners and pickeral rigs with shiners or worms it seems either most are goldeye or there were not as many Mooneye around.
Goldeye seem to get a lot bigger. Both mooneye and goldeye taste horrible. But pound for pound...I would fly fish for goldeyd or trout all day long. They use the current so well in the battle.
Had some crazy awesome spinner fishing for gold eye in Edmonton. Mepps with the black and gray bushy tail and silver spinner. Weighted or unweighted depending where I was fishing. They seem to be at a certain depth and love current edges.

I wish there were lots of Goldeye here like there used to be.
Lots of people don't like them but not me. I'd just as soon eat them as any slimy slough shark.
Plus they are every bit as sporting to catch as any trout and ten times easier to clean.
The only down side to them as far as I'm concerned is the flesh has no texture and they can be oily, especially in southern waters.
I caught some in the Red Deer river years ago. Those were too oily even for me.
But alas, the Goldeye are few and far between in the Peace River now.

Smoked goldeneye is a delicacy for some. Goldeye fried in butter is a rancid mistake of epic proportions. Been there. Gross.
