Which part of the river? Upstream of the Bassano dam or downstream?

I’m sure hooks work anywhere on the Bow River?? I believe the first question should be . . . “What fish are you trying to catch & are you fly fishing or spin/bait casting“ ??

Are you fishing from shore or a boat ? Rapalas, Mepps, Panther Martins, small Len Thompsons all very common & effective. Have fun. Good luck!

Light line, small spinners and spoons. Lots of patience and casting. As far as hooks go..... try barbless. Better challenge

Bigger backwater pools might have a big pike in them(spoons), try your Mepps/Spinners in the shallow ripples, maybe a Rapala in some deeper moving stuff. Not a lot of tackle required, a hike and the water pretty good day. Have fun!

Fishing the Bow this time of year you'll wanna sling dry flies. Caddis patterns generally kill it there as to blue-winged olive patterns.

When we drifted it last September I would sling a hopper dropper rig out and let it drift alongside us. You tie a nice big dry about 12 ft from the tip of the fly line on a tapered leader. Then below that (depending on the depth) a 3-6 ft of tippet with a nymph. Midge larve, caddis or pheasant tails down under the dry will usually work.

Just make sure they are weighted correctly depending on the speed of the water. You can even add a third fly tied below the dropper if you're feeling game. Just watch the wind or you'll end up slinging a birds nest around above the boat.

If you are just starting out spinners are probably your best bet. You can get all types of fish (rainbow, brown, bull, whities, pikes) in all sizes too. Get a feel for depth, slow/fast reel, tip up/down.

wire worm under a bobber. That's what half the people you see fly fishing from guided boats are doing

South Calgary ice free this week. I fish all winter in this area. When ice is thin I go to faster water and when ice thickens you can access water further out you usually can't.

North Calgary totally different. I live in the south and fished by my house and the north by bowness is iced bank to bank.
