As soon as the season opens for bow there is activity. last year the squad got one with the bow on the 15’th and we got one on a draw with the rifle on the 29th of sept. They where sinning the song of there people both times.

Same timing from Alaska to New Brunswick and everywhere in between.

Elk rut in September, moose in October and deer in November. It has not changed in last 60 years I have been hunting them throughout Alberta.

I have different people say different things on calling. Cow calls are the only thing I have ever used with success. I have tried bull calls an send them packing out of town. Mabe just me 😬

Bah, I'm impressed!

But seriously, there's a time and place for the grunt/glunk. Maybe it was the wrong time/place/bull?

If that’s the case then you’ve missed some of the best calling there is

Umm. Maybe it has changed. I killed a very mature bull moose on Sept 24. Full moon and he was chasing a cow. We called him in with cow call. In 402. So they rut in late September. And I have called in numerous Bull elk in with cow call in October. So elk do rut in October. Also in the 400 zones south of HywY 1. You sir are missing out!!

Last week of September can be pretty slow still. Depending on temperatures outside. If it’s hot and dry it’s hard to find them moving. First week of October seem better.

Guys, I know a lot of young bucks chase young things on Saturday night that are not in heat and not interested. Just because a horny bull moose is running around bush in September does not mean breeding season.

The pre rut, like for whitetails, is when they will be most responsive to calling
The 3-4 days before the last full moon in sept is ideal for big bulls

What tactics do you guys recommend for late October? My wife got her bull moose draw for zone 26 (Saskatchewan, just across the boarder from WMUs 200+163). She is hoping to get it done with her bow or crossbow. Are they still responsive to cow calls for the tail end of the rut? Or are you better off staying quiet and treating it as spot and stalk, similar to hunting mule deer?
Imput would be appreciated

Moon phase Has much less effect on moose than deer. Most ideal time to kill an Alberta moose is mid sept to mid October. Start cow calling early

The first tactic I'd start with is using a rifle.

A lot of really good info here have a read. Interesting note is September the big bulls are out rutting for the first rut, October is the second rut with cows 2 years old going into heat and the cows that were missed. I am not a moose specialist but in my spots there always rutting hard mid September and there done early to mid October. I have had late season moose draws and have always come home empty handed vs mid September otc archery tags and rifle draws that are more often than not successful. The rut time table is always confusing some people think it has to do with the moon some guys says it depends on the spring grass and some guys says it’s the amount of daylight I’ve always found mid September to be the most productive. Hope this helps

If I had a week to call moose anywhere in the province it would be the first week in October. And pray for heavy frost and hope it's not windy.

Activity is often weather dependent. Even when the rut is full swing the amount of movement and sightings will be dependent on the weather.
That being said my best window for movement has been sept 28- oct 10
These 3 bulls were called out, oct 6, September 29, oct 13 left to right

I’ve been told that the majority of cows get bred during the fist week of October. I’ve found that bulls will respond best during the last week of September during the pre-rut but the first week of October during the actual rut is good as well. It might depend on how many bulls are in the area, i’m Not sure, because a bull tending to a cow won’t leave her to come to the call......others will though.

Mid sept things start to move around and that first moon in the sept or early oct is a hot time to be out,but it doesn't stop there.

Lots cows and bulls are still on the go in late October up to nov the 10th depending on the moon.

Largest bulls I shot were in that final rut in around nov 4th,then where I live they start to herd up and are on the move, then that first -30 below hits in mid nov or so and them cows lift them calves and walk them along with other bulls who have now herded up so this was one of my favorite times to hunt. The calves have never seen the cold so it's shock to them, plus a calf in dec is 50 pounds heaver then in sept. The large bulls are wore out in early nov so the biggest and strongest are still around, plus there into feeding for longer periods on willows or whatever and more relaxed.

Most hunters have stopped hunting and if you know where they travel from there fall to wintering grounds you may just see things that are very cool.

And spend many hours prior to finding the cows then poke around during the rut acting like a cow.....some bull will come check you out......late sept/early Oct.....great time of the year!
