Default First berries of the year :)

Haskap transplant from last year. Should have taken a picture of the bush first. Aside from the nocturnal whitetails munching on it, I think it's done well. About four cups so far, doesn't look like there will be much more this year.

thanks to all the rain the saskatoons and various wild cherries look great too. Should be a good year. Anyone else found berries yet?

My 8 Honeyberry bushes are now about 5' tall. Was loaded & huge berries this year.......then the Cedar Waxwings moved in. They "harvest" while green.
Be lucky now to get enough to cover one palm.

Next spring I'm building a new "aviary" over them !

Waxwings cleaned mine out already as well.
They are sharp looking birds, but I'd like to eat some of those berries one year.

A Haskap article you may be familiar with but in case not. Some interesting stuff.

I had never even heard of them to be honest but now you have my interest piqued.

We've got 15 bushes of various kinds. Boreallis, Honeybee, etc. that are in their fourth year. They are absolutely loaded with huge berries!

You have to have a few different varieties to achieve proper pollination.

If anyone is getting new plants have a look at the new variety called Blizzard. Their fruit is HUGE! I may pick up a few this Fall. Google "Haskap Central" to order and look at some information.

The University of Saskatchewan are leaders in the development of haskap varieties.

If you let the berries get really ripe (just before falling off) they are not as tart and some varieties are almost sweet.

Anybody make haskap wine? I tried some last year from a friend and it sure is good. I'm going to give it a try this Winter.

That makes me remember wild strawberries with fresh farm cream at Grandma and Grampa's... there is nothing better.
