Montana Elk decoy
Hello guys!
Does anyone use those decoys for elk hunt with a bow ?
I bought one a long time ago and never used it .
Is it a good thing or a useless piece of equipment?

They work awesome. I've been stuck before when that bull won't get any closer, but when they see another elk they come right in.

Might wanna use the moose decoy for the moose, not the elk one
Tried a Montana decoy only once and found it more hassle than what I was willing to do for the hunting I was doing but based on the results others claim I would think it's worthwhile for the right set up

Thay can be a bit clumsy especially if there is any wind in open country. But it has worked well for me on a couple animals elk and moose the deer one I didn't really care for but that was the original version the new ones are better colours and patterns. If you are behind it hiding and something hangs up reach up and move the ears in a natural way it can put confidence back in your incoming animal. Montana decoy also has a quick guide to popular setups someplace in sure you can find it online.

Thanks for your reply guys!
It was very helpful.
As I understand nobody is using those metal legs that come with a decoy , but just hold with hands or tight up to the bushes with a rope , right?

I bring the legs along but don't usually use them and leave the decoy. I shortened the legs one section that makes it easier to walk with, then I sewed on a archery forearm protector to one side on the decoy so i can kind of hold it like a shield with still being able to walk and keep my hands free for bow / rangefinder.

Raw outdoors
Do you draw your bow and shoot when the decoy is still attached to your hand or put it on a ground ?
Sorry , maybe its a silly question for someone, but want to be comfortable using this decoy when/ if comes to the point.

I have practiced shooting with it on my arm. It's not an issue with no wind ! I have always removed it to shoot at an animal Because there is a lot of movement and when you Point your bow at the target your decoy disappears and leaves your very visible in open country but in the forest it would be possible to shoot with it strapped on and not get busted.

I made a small cut on the top of the decoy and put a close hanger inside for hanging on trees or fencelines instead of the stupid poles ... Works pretty slick

yes on the advise of Rocky Jabobson I added a carabiner to the top of mine and just clip to limbs....little wind adds some movement. It is way better than trying to set up the legs when staying mobile.

First season using a decoy, amazed how life like they look at a distance. Easy to set up and put in the back pack. Elk aren't in rut yet were I hunted this weekend so no true test yet.

Used a miss September decoy with a friend to walk from 300 to 100m of a group of cow elk a couple days ago. They looked at us a couple times but didn't take off.
