Cutbow?
 
Hey guys ... was out on the oldman yesterday probing for a bullie ... managed to get this nice rainbow instead. With the small amount red on the lower jaw, thinks it's a cutbow?

Yep,,,, hybridization of rainbows with cutties has been going on there for decades,, most trout likely carry genetic markers from both species.

Absolutely. Basically no pure cutts in the oldman with the possible exception of extreme headwaters above the falls.

I know a fisheries biologist and he was saying that when you look at a cutbow compared to a cutthroat trout they are identical, on a genetic level they are the exact same fish as a cutthroat trout.

Not quite, if 99 % of the fish in a given stream are pure 100% westslope cutthroat and one fish has 1% rainbow genes that stream is not classed as a pure cutthroat stream. The vast majority of the cutthroat in the upper OM are pure from about the wildfire base upstream. Or at least that was what I was told a number of yrs ago by the team leader that did the sample collecting and genetic testing.

BTW certain strains of red band rainbow trout also can have throat slashes and given the genetic mongrel stew our wild rainbow trout are, throat slashes are not really an indication of cutthroat genes.

Slashes underneath certainly doesn't mean Cuttbow. Lots of stillwater stocked rainbows have good slashes underneath...especially when eating lots of scuds

Thoughts on this one? Cuttbow or straight rainbow? Had the slashes but it sounds like that isn't definitive. Out of the Highwood.
