At times it is hard to tell young moose tracks from elk. However dew claws, space between each step, number of animals together all play a role. Lastly when you find poop in trail or actually see animal then only time 100% sure.

I am leaning towards moose myself,,, it seems to be elongated more than an elk track which is more cow like (as in cattle)... but I have been fooled too many times to be positive one way or the other.

Not unusual to find moose in small groups btw.

It's a calf elk track inside a cow elk track. You can see the smaller track about 1/3 of the way back on the left side is sitting jus a little forward of where the cow track is, making the cow track look a little longer than what it actually is. It's too heart shaped to be a moose track imo.

......if they'd been down the trail, I'd go looking for a better pic, but if that wasn't possible, I'd be looking for black hair for sure.

in all my years of hunting, I've never seen an elk track that shape (maybe I've been wrong all along?)

Those are 100% elk. Not narrow enough for moose.

Elk. The track is in the sand so it appears bigger as it sunk but if you look at the bottom of the track it looks way to rounded to be moose.

Yep the easiest way to tell bull from cow and few people even know about it. I was told this by a biologist years ago and have found it to be 100% correct so far. I am sure there are some exceptions kind of like human males have a ring finger longer than the index finger and the reverse is true for woman...but there are a few exceptions out there....oh and I know most of you just looked at your fingers when you read that

One thing I forgot it's the rear hooves you look at.

Moose track, too pointed and not round enough to be elk. But what is that stain on the back of your hand from?

first thought was moose but I think it is an elk, the print in the sand is making it more difficult , if you just look at the bottom of the print to the tip of the hoof and ignore the widening and sluff of the sand around the print, it is rounded, Yup I am more convinced after staring at it that it is a cow elk.
