looking for Youth / compact 223?
Has anyone seen a compact 223 somewhere in stock? I'm not great on the internet, but I haven't had any luck locating one. Something affordable to get my son on some coyotes and he's really stuck on the 223.
I was thinking a savage axis compact or ruger american compact. I would way rather a old Winchester featherweight or something he might keep for ever but those are harder to find.
Any help locating one would be appreciated.

This is just what P and D shows in Edmoton. Bashaw sports would be another good option plus Proophet River.

If looking at a youth model I’d look long and hard at a .243 over a .223. You can load 50-55 grain bullets in the .243 for varmints. However you can get 100+ grain bullets and be suitable/legal for deer if he ever desires.

I have used both the Axis and Ruger compacts. The Ruger is a far better product, imho. The 243 suggestion makes a lot of sense. Now to find one...GoTenda shows 243 in stock.

The Hawkeye is far superior to the American.

Why not buy a nice full sized rifle that he can use for life and look for a beater second stock you can cut short?
I've done that with two rifles I have here that the g-kids can use. Have a shortened stock for a 700 LA in 257R and another 700 youth stock for a 700 SA.

Prophet River does carry used firearms too so it would be worthwhile calling them. Check Canadian Gun nutz too.

They list Savage with Accufit adjustable stocks, Axis Compacts and a bunch more in 223. There are more on page 3.

try to find a store that has the Howa mini action in stock. great little rifle, it's something he will keep for his own children. hard to find, Prophet river has carried them in the past, maybe they can order one for you.
ETA: looks like Marstar has some in stock.

Geez, thanks alot everyone!
As for the 243... I've had experience trying to be fur friendly with it and never had any luck. I also don't want to burn any more powder than required as to not develop a flinch early on.
He already has a full size heirloom hunting rifle waiting for him once he grows a bit. Just need this to get us through a few years, and with another son at 8 he could use it too when he's ready.
That hawkeye would be fantastic, a little more cash than I wanted to spend, but maybe. I bought a hawkeye when they first came out in 7mm rem mag but it didn't shoot good enough for me to keep, it was a plastic stock one though and I suspect that was alot of the problem.
I'll check this ellwood place out.
