Default If you could build a custom hunting rifle what would it be?

If you had to sell all your rifles, but were allowed to replace them with a single custom hunting rifle for big game in Alberta what would it be?

- Chambering
- Action
- Bottom Metal
- Trigger
- Stock
- Magazine if you choose to use one
- Scope

Love to hear your thoughts

I’ll bite.

I just put together a rifle for the deer woods this year and it’s great! For bigger game though I’d step up to something that burns a little more powder compared to the 6.5cm.

Chambering- .308win
Action- Terminus Apollo or Apollo Lite
Bottom metal- hawkins hunter m5. Very clean lines and slimmer than others
Trigger- triggertech special
Stock- Manners eh2/3 for the high comb and vertical grip. Ag privateer also handles nicely but maybe regret not going with manners. Don’t know though. Never handled the manners.
Magazine- MDT 3 round magazine
Rings- arcm10 rings
Scope- Meopta r2 1-6x24 or 1.7-10x42 with bdc3 reticle.
Barrel- Remington sporter contour around 20” length!

If you wanted a longer range rig. 6.5prc with a 22” barrel and terminus magazines!

I had Bill leeper build ..303 Brit chambered Ruger quite a few years ago, and it has killed a pile of game from 15 yards to over 350.
I have had several rifles built or rebarreled since, but they invariably cannot measure up to this Ruger, so they get sold, traded, etc.
This rifle has it all ( for me anyway!) from the fantastic wood,to the incredible workmanship on the barrell to the Kepplinger trigger and everything in between.
Anyone who has seen a Ruger single knows that the rib is screwed onto the barrel - Bill milled this one right into the octagon portion!
The scope has QD rings that a 1.5-4X Leupold sits in

I'm actually going to be placing an order on Monday with KS Arms (this on the advice of a number of people who know their work).

Going with the .338 Federal cartridge, KS LAR 3 lug action, #3 barrel contour with straight fluting 22" long, (all ceracoated black), their bottom metal and magazine, with a Wildcat composite TAC Hunter stock painted to my choice. Triggertech trigger.

Just because I can. I have been thinking about that cartridge for over a 10 year period (started about the time I got a 7mm08 and I thought it would make the perfect pair for everything).

I've got a new Zeiss V4 4-16x44mm with the firedot illuminated duplex reticle for it. More scope then I need for hunting, but nice glass.

Anyway. I'm kinda excited about it.

I’d have D’Arcy Echols build me a rifle on his LX-1 action with his McMillan stock chambered in the 30-06.

THE time it would take to do the oct barrel and integral rib would be more than it would take to build a complete action on a CBC machine

I’d have DoubleGun add a 700 recoil lug to a T3 Superlite, chambered in 30-06. Pillar bed it into a Wildcat stock, with a Pachmayr decellerator, pebble finish epoxy paint job. Factory trigger dialled down, pimpin tikka plastic bolt ball. Zeiss HD5 2-10, with Rapid Z-600 reticle, mounted in Talley lows. Lobbing 150g TTSX’s at 3000fps out of Norma brass………oh wait, I have that already

I’d add some kinda skookum bottom metal vs the factory plastic, but that’s it!!

I know not a custom, but it shoots like one and is Uber nice to pack and shoot.

Love to hear your thoughts

I think I would consider the Accuracy international ASR in 300 PRC and a 6.5 Creed barrel as well.

I would build the lightest 300 win mag possible. Sub 6 lbs would be great..with a detachable magazine

Likely a Leupold 4x12x40 scope

Dont care if it was stainless or blued, dont care who makes the stock, action, trigger etc

Just light. Crazy light.

And no muzzle break. No thanks. If you cant handle the recoil, buy a .22

That sounds like it would loosen your fillings and make the snot fly out of your nose, bud!

I wouldn't want to shoot that more then once at a time!

I would just buy a Cooper Excalibur 52 in 7mm RM or 6.5 PRC and throw a Zeiss v4 3-12 on it.

I’ve always wanted a .338 federal. 3 lugs are awesome and I’ve heard good things about their actions, barrels and workmanship.

The Canadian F class team has used their barrels exclusively.

I heard this info from Dennis Lair who is a member and smithed my rifle.

Now we're talking! This would be a heirloom rifle that could be proudly carried in the field and passed on for generations.

Could just as easily be a 270/280/7 mag, any of the 4 would suit me fine!

Having mine built right now.
Started life as a Remington 700 BDL with the engraved action.
Getting a ron smith gain twist barrel, Basically ending in 1-8
270 weatherby, throtted for 170gr Berger EOL
Drop out mag,
All getting reblued, deep rust blue,
25" barrel
Glass bedded
TriggerTech trigger
Original stock, as it fits me so well.
Leupold VX3 4-12 CDS
Should all be done in the next month or so.
I have light weight sheep guns, not much can be improved on a Kimber, so I didn't see a point in getting a custom build for this, but I wanted a great pairing to my customized rem700 in 358 norma, I like the 700 footprint.
So now I will have a 358 Norma, a 270Bee, 223 all in rem700 actions, should about cover me for anything that comes up.
