Default New stock recommendations

Looking to get a new stock for my ruger m77 25-06. I’ve found a few online, would like to get another wood one of some sort. Does anyone know a good place to order one ? And is it pretty easy just to change it myself? Or should I send it somewhere? Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

In wood, the choices are limited, Boyds is likely your best/most affordable bet. A proper bedding is always a good idea.

I have 3 Boyd’s stocks have been happy with them some minor bedding/inletting usually required but it’s very straightforward.

You won’t find anything looking around. Save your gas.

Boyd’s has some pretty damn nice walnut stocks. Be absolutely sure to take Dick284 up on his generous offer. You don’t have to be a gunsmith to do a great job bedding a rifle, but you do need to know what you are doing or you can Bubba things up in a big hurry. I am confident in doing my own now, but only because I had forum members like Dean2 and Bobby B help me in the past. Way to go, Richard!

This is why this forum exists, it sure as hell ain’t for Covid and Politics.

The factory Ruger wood stocks are actually pretty good. If you glass bed them they make a great stock with good ergonomics and lined up properly to minimise recoil. Spending the money to get it Devcon bedded will get you much further ahead than replacing it. If you need to replace it, you can order from Boyds, or there are a fair number of places that have duplicators that can make you one from any kind of wood you like. I second MCRS as a good Canadian option.

I would go with byods one-all. Especially if you're planning to shoot in summer and hunt during winter. Due to reason, length of pull will change due to amount of clothing.

In my eyes, adjustable stocks = better ergonomics/better fit. Better ergonomics/better fit = better shooting.

Hmm. MCRS certainly appears worth taking a hard look at, plenty of options there, guess I'll have to check that out sometime when I get to Cgy again. http://www.mcrstactical.com/index.html

Chris at MCRS did up a stock for my lefthand REM 788 (try finding one of those)

I’m very happy with his work.

Is a stock like that comparable to a Boyd’s pro varmint with a few options added price wise?

I've got a couple of Boyd's Prairie Hunter stocks on Tikkas. One's a laminate stock and the other is walnut. The laminate is noticeably heavier than the walnut. Both needed some final sanding to make things fit just right.

All in all I'm pretty happy with them.

This is an example of a Left Hand Thumbhole from Boyd's, made for a right bolt Remington Short Action model 700. I have bought and installed a lot of Boyd's stocks. They need a little fitting and bedding, but very hard to beat what you get for the price they charge. I have three or 4 surplus LH thumbhole right bolt stocks for Savages and Remingtons for sale in the Buy and Sell.

Wouldn’t know, I have never used a pro Varmint, nor purchased one.

I’ve got quite a few Boyd’s stocks. Good quality for the money but they are not Light. I put a pro varmInt on a T3 and it made it feel like a heavy pig.

I have a MCRS stock on my heavy barreled 6.5-284. It’s a McMillan A5 clone at a fraction of the cost.
