Default Newell sunday in a canoe.....crazy?

Me and a friend are going to Newell on sunday early(daylight). I'm going im my 17 ft aluminum canoe. I know the wind can get pretty crazy on that lake, so we plan to go very early sunday morning, then beach it and fish off shore till the wind calms down in the evening.(unless it doesn't get windy at all!) any suggestions where I should launch it, prefer closer to some action, the less paddling...the more fishing. we are going to have a fish finder as well, but it is the first time using on, so hope I get the hang of it quick.
any help, or suggestions would be great! thx: MAG

You should download a depth chart for it here.

Or would I be better off going to travers?.... walleye and pike are really what I'm targeting. one better then the other?

I prefer size to the walleye.... I like the challenge. big pike are a plus, just still getting adjusted to alberta resevoirs, and lakes. I just knew too many places in MB when I lived there, for size...or just for numbers, for pike and walleye. as long as I hook into at least one good walleye.... I'm happy. thx for your help by the way.... I plan to make a trip down to pcr in the next couple weeks, with the gf...it will keep her happy.

You may want to check JTS's map as well. I marked a point that is easily accessed from the Kinbrook boat launch. It's close to shore and to the launch as well so you should be able to keep ahead of trouble. Keep an eye on the weather it can come up really fast on Newell.

And usually the wind is from the NW, so it can blow you where you don't want to go.

If you're fishing early in the morning or late at night, the drop off right outside the (west) of the launch at Kinbrook is good for both big eye's and decent pike. As AA said, the island to the north can be good or the point just a little further north is better yet. That's getting pretty far to paddle. Lots of big walleye in the lake for sure, always a good time. Travers you could fish the creek in a canoe easily in the "river" portion of it for walleye and the flats for pike.

WEAR A LIFEJACKET! The wind can come up there like you've never seen. Early AM is usually OK but it's scary how fast it changes there sometimes.

Stay relatively close to shore or stay in the small bays and you should be fine.
