Default Crimp groove

If a bullet such as an SST were to have a crimp groove and I was going to change the OAL to try and accurize the load, is it ok not to use the groove? Do they put it there for a reason or is it for a this is about where it should be?

You need not use the crimp groove. There are even some bullets made with two crimp grooves to give you a seating depth option when crimping. If it's a round for a bolt-action rifle then go ahead and seat that bullet wherever you like. If it's for a rifle with a tubular magazine or even a semi-auto then the bullets should be crimped.

Bullet CANNELURE's are only required in rifles with tubular magazines, and some auto loaders, and a few extreme recoil cartridge combinations. I have 2 auto loaders and only use the bullet cannelure on one of them, the other has bullets set to seat farther out than the cannelure requires.

Also many bullets do not come with cannelures these days.

A good reading of the introductory sections of a couple loading manuals will explain in depth how to accomplish this.
