Default Lessons learned on big whitetail

It started when I was a young boy. The excitement and rush seen and felt when a big mature buck steps out.

My father taught me all the practical skills growing up I needed to be a successful hunter. Including the areas he hunted.

I was probably 14 or 15 years old the first time he set us up on the cutline together telling me " this is a good spot. the heavy bush on one side is where they like to hide, and the fields on the other side is where they like to feed. In between is the perfect place to wait." That very morning, a big mature buck stepped out about 400 yards and my old man said. " that's the kind of of deer we are waiting for. He's walking straight toward us! You get ready and wait till he is In a good range and gives you a good broadside shot, and you take him." I was so excited I looked through the scope and it looked like an easy shot staring straight at me. I fired. Clean miss. My old man fired up. "A big deer walks out and is walking straight towards us and you shot at the worst possible time!" Since then, I've had a lot of practise and shot a good few deer, including one or two dandy deer.

I've always loved that particular cutline and continue to hunt it, and many other similar areas. The problem has been as we grow older, we grow busier and the last few years me and dad haven't had the time to hunt together as much as we should, so this year, i made sure we'd get out together as much as possible.

It was maybe day 5 of our season together. we decided to go back to the same cutline I went to as a child and set up our blind for the afternoon hunt..

A couple hours later and a few sudoku games later a doe and fawn walked across and into the trees. Then after about 20 minutes, around 4 pm, the monster walked out.

He walked across The cutline into the trees on the other side and never stopped. Just enough time to decide he was a shooter. I got ready with the rifle just in case he stepped out again. Me and dad both stunned at what we just saw! Sure enough, what felt like forever later, the big buck stepped out, from the other side, walking the other way across the line. This time a little further. About 150 yards. I had him in my scope, vibrating with adrenaline, He was almost all the way across the line again! and I touched one off with the 25-06 and he disappeared in the trees.

My dad watching beside, he said " you hit him hard son!" but we decided we would give him some time as it was a moving shot. About half hour later I walked up to where I shot and looked about 15 yards to the right and there was this whitetail of a lifetime!!
Best part is it was with my dad in the same area he showed me, close to 20 years ago, hunting the exact same way he taught me to hunt as a child (now well in my 30's). Hope you fellas enjoy !

Five years to make your first post and you knocked it out of the park. That's the buck of a lifetime and a great story. I'm envious you get to hunt with your father, that's something I haven't had the privilege of doing since I was a kid. Congrats again.

What a fantastic buck! Congratulations! And what a special moment to share with your father. I never had the opportunity to hunt with mine, but I cant wait till my son is a little older so that we can enjoy those adventures together.

Pretty cool to be able to share this moment with your father.
