Default Moose Hunting Mud Massacre!

Getting ready to go up for the last week of September north of Slave Lake. With all the rain through August, and lately, I am starting to worry that I need to buy a hover craft for this year.

Has anyone been up, and how bad are the roads north of Slave Lake? I can tell everyone that the area around Calling Lake is fit for swimming with ditches full of water. I suspect this is going to result in some pretty wet cutlines this year.

I just got back from Slave Lake, it would raining about 3:00 every day and drizzle all night. Be nice come morning until 3:00 again. The roads were very muddy. Was to early for moose, seen some and got a nice bull on trail cam but never got a shot with the bow. Good Luck

Default Slave Lake

We have not gone two days without rain i don't think in the last two month's and this morning it was snowing.

Leaves are changing and it is supposed to be -6 tonight so the bulls should be going good by the end of september.

Back roads are really wet and muddy and the quad trails are not much better.

What WMU are you going to,if it is 511 then you should have no problems as it has lots of high ground.

Are area never got hit to hard last winter and there are lots of moose around.

Good Luck.

Brown Bear,

I hunt in 544, and camp on the Legal Petroleum Haul Road, Kilometer 28, at the top of the hill going down to Narrows Creek. I managed to stick a quad up to the fenders one year trying to get to a small ridge which always holds big bulls. The reason they are big is that every few years the 'skeg is dry enough to cross. This does not seem to be one of those years.

I am and am not looking forward to this, and will definately pack tire chains. Some years it costs $30.00 at the car wash just to get to the point of guessing the color of the vehicle.

By the sounds of it those of us that are headed north are in for a tough time this year... Are only hope is some frost... We are headed up to moose camp on the 3 of Oct so hopefully we are getting some good frosts by then... According to the long term predictions it is supposed to be a cold fall.. Who knows...

Default Muddy Moose Camp

My guess is it will be a wet one with the rain we had in the past few weeks.

We also head out on Oct 3 and I think its going to be one of those wet years getting in. Might even now have to quad into the camp site which would not be the end of it all, just might have to pack 2-3 tub trailers on this trip. Even in the bad years up north we got in with the trucks, but last fall a cat went thru and plowed the grass off the trail There are a few holes but over the 17 years at camp, we know where to cross when the mud holes are bad.

Where heading in North of Slave on the 28th....we have a 10km drive from where the road can really turn to s*#t to camp....take it slow and easy, shouldn't be too bad.....but past camp, sounds like the quads may have some tuff slugging....

That being said....thats what it's all about....I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Good luck and straight shooting guys!!!!!
