Default Gophers

Got out today with my Stevens 22-250 and I had a great time first time shooting a gopher with it and can't believe what it does. Cool to see them go airborne in the scope then hear the pop. Lots around 100yrd and a couple at 200yrd.

I got 1 pic but it ain't pretty except to gopher hunters lol.

I couldn't believe the gun, I took 3 different loads for it with me and never had to change the scope at all.

I shoot them with my .222 and some of them get a bit of air time. But i dont think it woulld be as much as the 'ole -250 will do.

Default A bit of overkill i would say !

I just use a 22 lr & it does just as well ! You must have seen the u-tube video by the ******* who was shooting prairie dogs & a jackrabbit with a 204 ruger . There was nothing left of the rabbit as it was blown in two. I think he was a little sick & should get help .you should try a bow or slingshot sometime which takes skill. If you tie flies which you probably don't , the gopher tail hair makes excellent hair wing flies for fishing ! If you keep using that calibre on them , that's about the only part of them that's still useable ! Save the gopher tails !!!Sometimes I just cut their tails off the ones that get run over on the road !! I tie flies!!lol

That's good to hear. I have a new 17HMR that is dying to get sighted in and start nailing gophers.

Sounds better than the bead sight, .22 rimfire I use. I have to get pretty close before I can hit one. I am not a great shot and only got 2 gophers in a few hours hunting them on Tuesday west of Priddis.

Default Two gophers in two hours ????

THERE ARE NICE 3X9 SCOPES AVAILABLE WITH A 1 INCH TUBE FOR A 22 NOW & THEY ARE ONLY $40-$50 . i GOT A TASCO & IT IS A VERY GOOD SCOPE FOR THE PRICE -SPECIALLY MADE FOR 22. LAST TIME I WAS OUT , I SHOT OVER 100 IN 2 HRS. ! NOT BOASTING , JUST GIVING APPROX FIGURES , BUT I SHOT OVER 1500 ON ONE PASTURE & THE FARMER SHOT ANOTHER 1700 OR MORE ON THE OTHER SIDE ! HE SUPPLIED A FEW BRICKS OF 22 LR & WHEN I RAN OUT I USED MY OWN ! THE HAWKS , MAGPIES, CROWS , RAVENS, & A COUPLE BALD EAGLES WERE HAVING A REAL FEAST !! i IMAGINE THE COYOTES ATE WELL AT NIGHT TOO !

Default About gophers & badger holes !

I was shooting gophers with a farmer friend of mine & i was telling him that when i was a kid , a farmer used to supply 22 shorts for us & let us shoot gophers on his land. He would even lend us an extra 22 & tell us to get more shells at the house when we ran out !he said it was better to shoot them & not have to put an animal down because of a broken leg ! My friend said , " hell you don't have to worry about the animals all the time, i stepped in one of those damn holes one time & broke my ankle !! " we got out to look at one big one we shot, about 13 inches from nose to base of tail, & my friend said, "well if you ever wanted a trophy gopher -this could be the one," & we laughed !! Might have been related to "balzac billie" or a distant cousin !!!:d:d:d

open sites is all we use , kind of fun practise. We managed about 20 yesterday and a crow . Having said that I'm putting a scope on a .22 soon just because you see more. I was using the binocs to spot them but a scope would have been perfect
