Default Herring spawn

Down at the beach in Nanaimo watching a natural wonder. Water rippling as far as you can see in all directions from herring spawn. Sea lions working in groups, seagulls strung out for miles, larger fish leaping, eagles dragging the surface. Shore line looks like heavy frost from eggs and the water has a characteristic foam from spawn. Very cool.

Lets hope that the eggs are successful in attaching to kelp and rocks.

For years the herring roe fishery has crushed the herring numbers, resulting in less feed stock for the salmon, and everything else.

In the early 1990's on the south end of Denman Island there was a herring school that was over 1 mile long, and the fishing was insane. Lets hope those days return.

Unfortunately not. Just back in from the same hike and no fish or birds. Sea lions lined up swimming south. I never saw them but reports of 9 Orca going though day before.
