St croix mojo ice rods
Guys what brand and kind of reel do you use with you St Croix Mojo ice rods. I have the Medium 32 inch mojo ice rod with a Shimano Sienna 1000fe reel.

St Croix Mojo Ice 28” Ultra Light and I use a 13 Fishing Black Betty Freefall ice fishing reel. Love the reel with the freefall trigger and with it being an in-line reel no line twist or very minimal. I use Power Pro Ice braid line in 5 lb test with a flouro line as a leader.

That is an ocean size reel not ice rod. The stella is no where near that price at Bass. Most run around the 8-900 mark.

Does the water saturated braid cause your inline reel to freeze up? Not in a tent of course but outside on cold days. I use bait casters with braid and they will freeze up for sure on cold days outside...…...tent or warm day reels...…...and yes I like the no line twist.

Only time I have used them outside of a warm tent they worked fine but it was not a bitterly cold day, probably around -10C or so.
Issue outside is the line freezing and making it hard to reel in because of ice on the line and the small eyelets.

I’ve seen my buddy break 2 of those rods this year, and I broke mine. I recommend not setting the hook too hard with them or they will snap like a twig. All 3 were the 32” medium.

Wow that is nutts. Why would an expensive rod like the mojo break like that ? Did St Croix have an explanation or was it just a bad batch ? I did notice the rods were made in Mexico. Did St Croix replace all three rods? Has anyone else on this forum experienced the same thing?

I wasn't too happy about it. I don't think its a batch issue. My buddy has the longer version of the Mojo too and no issues. Ive read they replace them with no problems, but I haven't looked into it yet. Ive also read that these rods aren't made for aggressive hook sets. More along the lines of real in to set the hook. But what fun is that lol. I used mine 3 times before it broke, with 8 lb braid on a 5 lb pike, so nothing crazy there.

I was watching my buddy handle a mojo and it snapped. He wasn’t being rough with it.

When you say handle it. Was that with a fish on the end of the rod ? Or was he just putting a bend in the rod ?
