Default 8x57 mauser

Another curiousity question for the forum. I have had a Husqvarna commercial model 96 chambered in 8X57 sitting in my gun cabinet for a couple of decades. Over the years, I've shot lots of paper (It's accurate beyond belief) but never shot anything living. Anybody actually hunt with this caliber? How lethal? Currently use 170 gr. Hornday and 3031 powder. Any alternate suggestions?

Default 8 x 57

My experience: the Mauser 96 won't tolerate hot handloads so heed the cautions in the reloading manuals. Commercial ammo is fine.

In a M98 with full power handloads the 8x57 is approximately the same as the good old 30-06 in terms of oomph.

In an M96 with judicious handloads you'll be more in the realm of a weak 308.

I've seen some game shot with the 8 MM. The larger buller diameter makes it a decent killer.

Sounds like you have a nice rifle and should use it...

Good luck,
Bruce

8x57 is the 30-06 of Europe. It will work fine.
