The Learning Curve Continues...

The young fella is now proudly cooking up his buck for the family, and developing his own dishes / technique as he goes:

From all accounts that buck is tender & tasty!!

Guess I hung him long enough after all...

Cheers,
Nog

If that's a bowl of fresh cilantro then yes, he's got his head on straight.
Great to follow his journey. You've done him well.

Iv'e read this thread 3 times now and enjoy it more each time, your a very good person for doing this and he is very lucky to have such a great person to plant that seed of hunting in his mind that will grow for decades till he one day will remember you and help some other young hunter learn as well as he did from you.

All the best to both hunters.

CHEERS NOG.

This tale keeps getting even better!

Yesterday River Sportsman in Campbell River held their annual Big Buck Contest.
Quite a few entries!

Long story short, our Young Gun took first in Youth, then went on to win Best Overall for 2018!!!
He kept the first place prize, a new scattergun.
The Youth prize he returned with these words:

"Young ones like me and him are our future. He should get that prize, and I insist that he does."

Sure as hell made this old heart swell with pride I'll tell you!!

And true to his (and his Pa's nature) they didn't let even a single day go by without trying out the new toy!

Checking the fit:

Ready to shoot:

The report came back that it is a very nice shotgun, with a rather good full choke.
Super tight patterns.
50 rounds today.
Happy Happy!

Yep - Happy Happy all round!!

Cheers,
Nog

Bit of an epilogue to that story...

Since then the Young Gun has been shooting a lot.
He is damned good with both rifles and scatterguns.
In fact he quite often shows many up that are much older / more experienced than he when at the range.
And of course is itching to get hunting for another wall hanger...

Around a year ago the True North Forum held a raffle for a custom 6.5 x 55 Mauser 96.
By some odd stroke of luck, I won it.
Been toying with just what to do with it ever since.
Today I made that decision, and Paid It Forward:

The look on his face says it all...
The cast will be off his leg early next week.
He has promised to get practiced and be ready for when we roll up-Island.
His Pa & I are scheming...
There will be more to the tale soon methinks...

'Tis a very fine day to be alive!!

Cheers,
Nog

Awesome! Way to go Nog, coming from personal experience this year with you helping me out in trying to find a last minute salmon guide, great to have people like you on this forum willing to share knowledge and help out where you can.

Great to see the smile on the young hunters face
