Default Weird phone calls?

We live in a rural area. For the last while we’ve been getting phone calls, and when you pick up the phone there’s nobody on the other end. No one will answer when you say hello. I could see it being a coincidence every now and then, but it seems to happen quite a bit lately. What gives?

I have had the same thing, but in an urban setting. What I found was the call was from a "robo dialer". Someone on the other end waiting for you to answer. After a couple of "hellos" they would come on the line and start with their spiel. Sometimes you could hear others in the background. That is when I would hang up.

Since I started using "call control" there have been significantly less calls, but I am starting to see a trend whereby they have a person on the other end pressing the number and getting thru. Instant hang up when that happens.

I got a few calls from Switzerland yesterday, rang two or three times and then they hung up (I didn't answer either). Googled the number, the theory is they want you to call them back, and they somehow profit when you do.

Could be the robo call thing to though.

I get that a lot on my personal and company cell line.

I have a habit of not saying "hello" when I pick up on an unknown number, just in case it's a robocall that is waiting for a "hello" before continuing. I'll make some ambient noise (cough, rattle a pencil or bang on the desk). If there's a human on the other end, they'll usually start asking, "hello? Hello?" and I go from there.

Most of the time I just send 'em right to voicemail, though. If they want to talk with me, they can leave a message.

My favorites are the calls from "Jonathan Green" with a heavy East Indian accent, and poor pronunciation, from the cra demanding my VISA # to pay defaulted taxes, or the police would come in half an hour with an arrest warrant.

I either tell 'em to come and get me because I'm on the verge of bankruptcy and can't pay, and need a warm place to sleep in the winter.

OR: I'll meet him at a "safe space" right in the lobby to give him cash; and then give him the address of the neighborhood police station.

I'm not in jail yet.

Also - I'm kinda disappointed that I never got a call about the "grandparent scam" so I can play with them too!

This is just a part of the run of these for me on Sept 9, lol, the last time it happened:

At least these don’t leave voice mail every time they call.

When I get these I let them go to VM. Like said before if they want to talk to me they can leave a message. If they're junk I block the number. One and done.

If you are with Telus you can activate the "Call Control" feature. When somebody calls they will get a message along the lines of "This person has activated call control. To proceed with you call press X" where X is a random number. If they don't press the right number the call isn't even connected.

You can add numbers to an approved list that will bypass the prompt, or a block list that won't be able to call you.

You can view the last 10 callers through the Telus app, or their website and add to either list. They also show you the true numbers instead of the spoofed numbers that show on caller ID. All the 44 country code calls are from scammers that use VOIP calling and spoofed local numbers. They change their VOIP number at least daily. 99% of the calls I get to the landline were these scammers.

Not a big deal everyone, you can solve this simply by providing them with the numbers off the back of recently purchased unused Apple cards, they may also accept Target, and Microsoft, problem solved!

I have stopped answering phone calls coming in from any numbers I do not know and I am not expecting, period. If it is important or they are someone I know who is calling from a number not normally used, they can leave a message or send me a text.

There is a new texting scam. You get a text from a random number with a query that would normally illicit a response from nice people. “Hi, it’s Jane. Are you Billy’s coach”, “It’s grandma, do you have a spare key?”.
Your texting them back will be forwarded to a Caribbean island or the like and you’ll see a $9.99 charge on your phone bill.
Happened to folks on another site I belong to.
I don’t answer texts from random numbers. Straight delete.
