Default "When I do my part"

Wondering how others interpret this often used phrase which is frequently associated with descriptions rifles that shoot sub half minute groups?

Exactly as it is written. This is a phrase that we should use more often. Rifles are the constant in the equation if left to cool and shot in calm conditions. We are the variable.

I don't think there are too many shooters on our board who are able to consistently "do their part."

I'm gonna try this afternoon.

If it doesn't happen it's the fault of whoever is on the line and shooting a gun with a muzzle brake

There are also days. when everything you are doing, just seems not quite right, but the shot still goes where you wanted it to go. You don't argue with it, you just let it happen.

"When I do my part" = "Once in a blue moon"

Let's say your rifle turns in the occasional 1/2 inch group. The same rifle turns in the occasional 1 inch group.

Realistically, it's probably a 3/4 inch gun.

Guys will typically say, "When I do my part, it shoots half inch groups."

'When I do my part'

I shoot better some days, sometimes I suck. 'When I do my part' is on a good day, with a dose of fairy dust sprinkled on the target as well.

When we do our part, rifle and myself, together we put meat in the freezer. Last buck I shot with the 6-284 the one shot kill measured .250" a little hair opened up the measurement!

Its obvious that we humans are a much greater variable than some assembly of steel components housed in a stock of wood or composite. We've all had both great and mediocre days at the range (maybe even downright poor); our variables could be from mood, health, the weather making us shiver, excess caffeine intake, etc. The rifles we wield are much more steadfast. Of course if the rifle is left exactly the same and all its components are in order it remains as capable as its best day of consistent tiny groups, so its educates us mortals on our own inconsistencies or outright errors.

My part:
being relaxed
having a good position
Mind my breath
Mind my trigga finga
not letting my mind wander
Being absolutely steady without being stiff
Check shoulder alignment
Check bubble level
Being sure that I seated the bullet properly at good height last time I reloaded
Assessing the wind correctly for turret adjustments
And many more... Everything has to be done as fast as possible because the longer I wait the crappiest my groups are.
In a nutshell, my part is : think fast to hit true. I know my barrel won't lie.

For me, "doing my part" refers to all human factors.

Good point! And that includes everything from setting up and using the equipment from the loading bench to the shooting bench. Lots of practice makes "doing ones part" look a lot easier if it is to be done consistently.

I also translate that to mean, that I once fluked off a 1/2" group with the rifle.

But if every other group is a half inch or less and the ones that aren't are caused by the shooter or other variable factors like wind etc.. lots of guns will shoot tiny groups but their operators are the weak link. At a benchrest match most guns there are capable of consistent 1/4" groups or less, few shooters can 'do their part' to utilize the guns potential.
