Default custom .410 slug gun

I just became aware of these they seem pretty sweet to bad its a no go here for big game.
Guys are getting 45/70 performance out of custom guns with custom loads.
And apparently the regular old school .410 with over the counter slugs are fairly common for close range deer hunting in some states.

A 410 3" slug is more than needed, but less than legal.

Article on 410 slugs

http://mcb-homis.com/slug_410/slugtest/

Could kill a deer but there's lots of better choices

Im sure most people are well aware of that dick.
Just thought it was interesting how innovative people get to squeeze 45/70 performance out of a round most people use for grouse and rabbits.

I see your point, but thought it would be prudent to bring attention to the obvious, for the sake of assuming everybody has a firm grasp on the rules and regs......

After reading the article, I can understand why.

Yes illegal for hunting.....but would it be a good bear defense gun, especially with the last ammo tested in the article? They are cheaper than a 45-70.

Considering the 12 guage version of most firearms offered in .410 are usualy close to the same price its kind of pointless.
And to reach 45/70 performance in a .410 you need custom hand loads in a custom gun that can handle them.neat stuff for sure but a 45/70 would make more financial sense all said and done.

I was thinking the difference in weight between a 12 and a 4.10. The 4.10 being cheaper than a 45-70 and lighter than a 12 guage.

That would be the main advantage for sure.
I guess a .410 in your hands in a far cry better then a 12guage on your back or sitting near by when you need it asap.
From the limited reading i have done about them it seems they like to compare a over the counter slug to being simular to a 357mag performance wise.

There's an old saying for this;

If you shot a bear with a 410 double save one barrel for your self !

Here is a little more food for thought regarding the .410 i stumbled upon.
A load of 000 buck out of one is equivalent to putting 5 9mm into a target with one pull of the trigger. Up to about 25 feet or so that is they have no problem going through 4 layers of clothing and 12-15 inches of ballistic gel.

Has anyone came up with a "41" caliber rifle that would be legal to hunt with in alberta but is also capable of handling .410 shells? Something like the Taurus judge with 45LC/.410 only bigger

Something like a .444 Marlin extended to 3 inch length.
