Default 2019 Ice Reports

Dunno if we can get a sticky on this to keep it at the top of the page, but...

IT BEGINS!!!

I took a drive today, and some of the smaller lakes are starting to freeze over. Muir, Chickakoo, Sauer, and a few others are icing up. Even Devil’s Lake had a few feet of ice around the north shore. I would imagine a little farther north and west they are starting to freeze over as well.

It will be a while before the ice is thick enough to venture out on, and remember there is no such thing as safe ice (unless it’s in your drink). Stay safe and have fun this winter!

Gonna take the boat in for winterizing this weekend and then the hardwater prep begins! Have so many plans and goals for this year, including an entire week in southern Manitoba/NW Ontario at the end of March to really take advantage of March Madness out there. Maybe most importantly, tho, I want to find a true trophy walleye in Alberta this year...they're much rarer than in MB.

Nice what do you consider a true Alberta walleye trophy

Anything under 25" I wouldn't even mention having caught, and for Walleye, "trophy" starts at 28" for me. (In MB, I'd say 30", 'cause there's just so many big greenbacks) I've never even seen one through the ice here (I know the rivers have them, but I'm told they're super rare in lakes in AB, especially south of Edmonton)...

So yeah, TLDR is: Want to get a 28"+ walter through the ice this winter...

I would argue that there are far more trophy walleye south of Edmonton than north and by south, I mean south of highway 1...

Awesome! Wouldn’t mind a trip to MB again myself! Those Trophy Alberta Walleye are hard to find, but they’re around!

There was a website suggested a few times on here that you could see daily satellite images and watch the ice come or go. Can’t find it now.

I remember those! Can’t remember which website it was either. I’m sure I could dig it up... curious about a few lakes a few hours north already...

Just drove past Jackfish and Mink Lake, they are both freshly iced over. Didn’t go check the thickness as the ice cover is new. Coming along nicely though!

Glad to hear things are freezing up down south! Sounds like Newell is entirely ice covered bow. Been a slow process around Edmonton. I think this is the week the bigger lakes ice over up here as well.

The main lake at Newell is still open, but there were actually people ice fishing at the mouth of Rainier Bay this morning... Late last week Greenwald Bay only had an inch at most of ice over it.

Going to head out again tomorrow. Haven’t decided if I want to drive 4 hours and fish for some bigger fish or stay closer to home
and maybe hit a few lakes. Will report back after the day is done!

Something different .... check this link out.

Sylvan Lake .... a 360° perspective from the lighthouse taken on Nov 11th by a local company called TD Aerials, still lots of open water.

I walked 100yards out onto chain lake today, ice was solid and black 2” under the snow, a small bit of flood ice around cracks. But I don’t recommend walking and fishing on 2” of ice unless you like swimming and cane save your own self.

Anywhere from 2-5” of ice on lac Ste Anne. Lots of frozen slush on top, but it was solid! Fishing on the other hand was slow... 3 walleye and a hammer handle! Now off to Cali for a week, then back to ice!

Wink Devils/Wabamun

5-5.5" at Devils near Onoway.....ventured out maybe 50m and it was consistent....tracks from more brave souls went a lot further out...water is really murky.
Wabamun in Moonlight bay had the same 5-5.5" all the way across.... fished in 6-7 feet of water...5 walleye and a pike...lost a few more in about an hour and a half.....great day for first outing of the season..
