Is this a good deal? (.300 Win Mag w/ Scope)

On a local buy and sell I found someone selling a Browning (not sure if A-bolt, X-bolt, etc.) .300 Win Mag with an UNUSED Nikon Monarch 3 Scope 4x16x50 for $800.

This sounds like a really good deal to me, but I was hoping to get a second opinion. I was planning to buy my first rifle this year, and was looking at a .270 from Cabelas for around $600. I'm hoping a .300 Win Mag isn't too much rifle for a beginner, I am hoping to bag a deer this season.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions here?

Sounds like a good deal, but I think that depends on the condition of the rifle, too.

Also, I don't want to open the can of worms that is "Best first rifle calibre," but I started with a .30-06, and had a bit of a flinch for a while...

If it were me, I would buy that rifle, keep the scope, sell the browning and buy a cheaper .270.

That's just me though... Seems like a good chance to turn a profit, but I also don't know much about a lot of guns, so take this with a grain of salt.

EDIT: Cabela's has the 4-12x50 scope listed for $649.99... So the rifle will cost you $150... BUY BUY BUY

A 300wm for a first rifle is a lot of gun.
If I were you id be shooting one before buying one

Any of those calibers will cause a flinch, my 300wm actually has less recoil then my .270, but this is because, my 300wm is almost 4lbs heavier. $800 is a great deal, but go with what your heart says, there is never regret when you go that route. For hunting deer .270 is a ideal caliber, and with these new ammo variance, it will be great for big game also!

I do believe the A-Bolt 3 is Brownings cheaper rifle but I have never owned one and dont know what they are worth.

Depending on the condition, the deal might be good, but that combination would not be my choice for a beginner. The300winmag is a lot of cartridge recoil wise for a new shooter, and I would start with a scope with a minimum magnification of no more than 3x, especially for a beginner. Beginners often have issues finding animals in the scope at close range, and lower magnification helps in this regard. As well beginners often crank the magnification up, and forget to adjust it down, and when buck fever takes over, they often don't realize what the issue is until the opportunity is lost. As well, a 50mm scope has to be mounted higher, which can cause fit issues, that can result in getting slapped in the cheek under recoil, which will already be a concern with the 300winmag

There are a lot of great gun buys on the used market. For the princely sum of $800.00 I'm sure you could find a real nice high quality rifle, with 'scope, that would suit your needs perfectly .. maybe something like a 6.5. They are easy to handle and will do pretty much what you ask of them.
As a new shooter, big Magnums won't do you any favors, that's for sure.

Scope is $ 525.00 brand new in Edmonton so they're valuing the rifle at $ 275.00??

I think I'd want a good long look at that rifle before I jumped on the price point.

And yes, 300WM is a lot of rifle for a first time buyer. as someone already mentioned, try shooting one first. If you find out it's not for you then it won't even be worth $ 275.00. closer to nada in your hands.

Great deal if its in good shape. Don't let anyone scare you off. 300 Win is excellent, if you find it too much for you sell it, you'll make money. Which buy and sell lists guns? I'd like to shop there too.

It would depend on what action. I do not know if a 300 would be OK for you but I know a 270 is a good choice for deer.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Elkhunter11 made some interesting points I never considered. Morinj also made a good point of going with my heart... I think I might just buy http://www.cabelas.ca/product/76987/...w-vortex-scope as it's the gun I've been looking at for a while AND it's now on sale.

Fallen1817, I may consider what you suggested, and buying this for the scope and trying to sell/trade the rifle for a .270
