Would you guys rather have a wide tracked skandic or a regular width tundra for trapline (as well as ice fishing, etc) if all else (km, year, etc) was equal.

Actually, NEITHER!!!!

Get yourself a Yamaha VK540. Two speed transmission, 20 inch track, long track, very reliable.

There is a new version out that has the heated carb setup and other upgrades, but the old tried and true is a standard in many parts of the world.

I have used many different machines on my remote trapline of 160 km round trip, started with a Tundra R 280, 380 Skidoo, then a 550 Tundra, a 1200 4 stroke skidoo and now 600 Ace Skandic which is the best machine for my use.
The fourstroke out performs the 2 stroke in fuel milage and reliability, and the skandic can pull alot more then a tundra.
Now with 4stroke machines i can run them well past 10,000kms without any concerns about engine failure.
If you’re pulling lighter loads and narrow trails its hard to beat a tundra although the Skandic is only couple inches wider ski stance.
One is a 1/2 ton truck and the other 1 ton.
I average 3500-4000 kms per year running the bush trails.

Run skidoo SWT (super wide track 24”), couple 900 ace and couple 600 ace. Fort Saskatchewan Nordic ski club. Picked up at riverside $15,000.00 all in. Good machine, torquey, and the 600 are fuel efficient. We average 2000 km/ annual. Pull 800lbs track setters. Don’t get off the trail with the track setting. You will quickly be digging a hole and stuck. If in doubt Gassit……

A skandic WT with 600etec is a Cadillac.

I’d take a Tundra LT in 600 Ace. Both the Skandic and Tundra are pogo style front shocks and nice wide belly pan. Same 154” SC5U rear skid. Major difference comes in track width 16 vs 20/24 and pulling capability. I would never pull more than 300 pounds so don’t need that ability of the skandic. Plus I’ve sat on 20” wide expeditions and it feels like your riding a cow. For anything I would do the standard 16” width would be more than enough.

I agree the Yamaha vk540 a real workhorse pulling machine. My trapping partner is 80 years old now and he has one hell of a problem fighting his heavy machine on the trails. PS it sure drags moose out of the bush!

Have a VK 540 , would love to find another.....tough to find in good shape , they are the ultimate work / ice / fish sled....the tow ability is amazing

When my hunting partner first got his Vk540, we shot 2 bull moose first morning. He said he would pull both out of bush at same time. I told him he was just BSing me as I tied my large bull to back of his sled. He takes off as if moose not even behind him. The antler caught a good sized pine tree stump, he just ripped it out as if it was not even on our new cut trail.
