log books
The trapper log books are generally positive for fur management plans. However I believe telling the Guberment every time you go to the bathroom on the trapline is getting to be a bit much. A simple general annual report on trapline activity along with fur harvest numbers seems like a more reasonable expectation.

Sometimes there can be great results from small actions.
The Log books may turn out to be the single most valuable tool trappers have to demonstrate the value we bring to the table. (T.E.K) Traditional Ecological Knowledge is now a buzz word within the academic community, and active trappers have demonstrated the accuracy of their knowledge already.
I'm not talking about reporting on how many outhouse visits you make, but substantive data like this years query about Spruce Grouse numbers. There are many within the trapping community who just want to be left alone, and I get that. In a way I wish that world still existed.
But that world is gone and trapping now exists in a world largely hostile to it. We can stand on a soap box and spew some righteous indignation, and watch trapping disappear.
Or we can say, hey wait a minute. If we were an indigenous tribe in the Amazon you'd send scientists to learn our secrets. But because we're fellow Canadians you're ignoring the multi generational knowledge that we possess. And everyone loses when that happens.
But if wait for society to recognize our value we are screwed. Or we can push our way to the top. And force that recognition by demonstrating undeniable results. We have collaborated on world-class research and the world is noticing. And that's what an element within our trapping industry continues to do, and I will throw my full support behind them.
And really how hard is it to fill in a log book? Unless you actually don't trap your line.

So, now if you choose not to fill out a log book Trapping is at risk of disappearing?
You guys really ought to find some new material besides spreading the fear of losing trapping as a reason for Trappers to go along with everything. Hunting, Fishing and Trapping are Alberta rights protected in the “Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Act”. None of those will disappear “with a stroke of a pen”.
Maybe stick to the benefits of filling out a log book, if there are any, and leave the usual fearmongering out of it.

I think this spin on trapping data is quite novel. Trappers are being offered a chance to demonstrate they are able to deliver facts/data about wildlife on their traplines, and there are people who will eat this data up.
Then the trapper, instead of being public enemy #1 with the treehuggers etc, become the heros!
Thus people in demand... instead of scourge of the earth that must be eliminated.
Are you wise enough to see the potential of providing/(selling???) such data to interested parties?? Perhaps not making money doing it? (tho I think there will be money in it if we can demonstrate that trappers are not complete incompetent simpleton bush hicks) but validating the existence of trappers on the land doing a job, especially in winter that the citified bios and such cant do, cuz theyll die on the land trying!
Take a chance? This could turn into something??? These log books are simple, prove that you are capable and move to the next level.
Or watch as our sort are eliminated out of the forest.
The End
