Default Beaver drowning set with snare

Has anyone tried a drowning set for beaver with a 1/16" snare and lock, rather than a foot hold? I have some snares, and I think it might work, but has anyone tried it?

Works great with a slide wire and 1 cent slidelock-
(copper penny, two 1/8 holes, 90deg bend).

Default wire size

Is a 1/8" slide wire too heavy or is there a better choice?

Are you talking open water or under ice snaring? Gotta ask to be sure.

If you are talking open water sets, I doubt it would be a good idea.
It would work if the beaver dove for deep water without fighting the snare first, but if it fought the snare and got tangled up, it would almost certainly break the snare. I don't think a Coyote snare would hold a beaver if it got tangled up on the shore.

I also wouldn't recomend leg hold traps for beaver, even in a drowning set.
A 330 works so much better and is so much easier to set and so much more flexible in where it can be used.

Under ice is a different matter. In that case, I would chose snares over other methods for 90% of the sets I would use. And although 1/8 is a bit light, it does work, I've use it plenty of times.

1/8 is a little light for beaver??? I think you got your sizes a little mixed up, I have caught plenty of beaver in drowning sets with 1/16 as well as slides over dams had no problems

YES and it works exactly like a leghold on a slide wire set. Just make the snare as small as possible and ensure the water is deep enough when the snare is cinched up so the beaver cannot reach the surface. Have used this system on a number of foot and conibear trap shy beaver.
