Default Trapping permission

Well I just renewed my license for the season and submitted for a WA19 to trap some water bodies which I've trapped numerous times before and lady at Calgary office just informed me that the Biologist for the area I'm looking at has to approve it and not District Officer, is this gonna be an issue, first time I had to deal with this.

I guess with the F &W officers now doing police work in Alberta, all the trapping approvals are now done by the Bios. This transfer to Bio's started about 5 years ago.

From all of the stories that I have heard about District Offices in the South, it seems to me that they love unnecessary bureaucracy. Up this way everything from trapping crown owned waterbodies to salvaging roadkill for bait is way, way easier. As long as a crown owned waterbody is not part of an RFMA, all that they care about is that you have permission from a landowner to access it. I’ve never had to get permission from a Bio for anything related to my residential trapping.

They dont count the golf course as " private property " is my guess ..seems like an unnecessary load for the bio to me .

Default Bios

We have been dealing with this issue in the NE for quite some time.
Get ready for some areas to be denied access, no reason given.

There were areas that I trapped for 10+ years, dealt with local CO annually, never had any issues. When Bio took over, access was denied. No reason given. All were crown land, ponds, lakes, creeks, lease land etc.

Has gotten to the point that ANY named water body, stream, etc. requires a signed form....sometimes it gets signed, sometimes it doesn't. Be prepared for long waiting times, and access to be denied if another trapper beats You to it.

Another Trapper is not my concern as I have seen no other interest in the area's I'm looking for permission on, as even stated by CO I'm the only one asking, now all of a sudden I'm waiting to see if I can utilize Public Land, ridiculous

Signed a new (Younger) partner on RFMA this fall. Told would need a meeting with the Bio first.

Default Success

Well finally after contacting Fish and Wildlife again asking on permission slips she looked into situation and apparently BIO responsible for area in question went on maternity leave and my stuff was left in limbo, lady I was dealing with ended up contacting another BIO who signed off on permission forms. Good thing I kept inquiring or may not of got Forms. Have a safe and successful season everyone. Peter Wild Land Trapping

Up until this year I just had to carry a signed WA19 from the landowner and I was good to go. This year I was asked to buy an additional license to trap on residential land for 21.00. I bought it this year, but I am considering telling them I won't buy it next year. I usually get 5-6 beaver off a problem area on private land every year. By the time I drive there and the fall beaver are poor to begin with, I'm in the hole.

Beaver can be trapped year round without a license and with land owners permission. Need a license for other animals that are classed as fur bearers. Check regulations as there are other rules that effect other animals out of season and problem animals.
