Default Tungsten...are your beads 100% or alloy?

I have noticed not all beads are the same. Some are way more attracted to a magnet then others and in facts should be only very weakly attracted.

So looks like iron being added?

I’m not impressed as I was under the consumer expectation that the beads are 100% tungsten

I want my chironomids to get to the bottom fast.

Are your tungsten beads attracted to a magnet?

Sundance, sum nice looking flys there,
Been tying up a few steelhead patterns, and tungsten nymphs, and that's a good point you bring up,
I just ordered a few hundred tungsten beads, price was good, so i have to check,

Ya. My understanding is there shut be a very small response to a magnet. Some of my beads can be picked up by my fridge magnet which tells me there is more iron etc than should be. So cheap Chinese beads are poor quality. Also the paint on the cheaper beads is noticeable.

Caught one after another for a species trifecta

Some great looking pictures Sundancefisher!

Have been looking for them lately and noticed very few if any(actually none I saw) are 100%. Many state about 96% or 97% or so.

Does it seem to be associated with a company perhaps? I would bet companies with cheaper options for tungsten contain more iron.

I have ordered from many different companies and while there appears to be a range, all will be picked up by a magnet. Some can shake off easily. Others stick harder.

Have you tried your beads and a magnet? Just a fridge magnet works.

It appears to be quite variable. I've been buying "tungsten" beads from Canadian Llama over the past year. The gold cone heads and round silver beads were easily picked up with a weak fridge magnet while the 7/64 gold beads were not!

No I personally haven’t. I don’t really use tungsten beads very often. I prefer brass. If I need to get down quicker I use my “shotgun” tungsten BB system. The only flies I use tungsten on are balanced leeches
