"Directions" to Big Iron
I was rereading the post about Big Iron Pond and realized there was not a real "trail" and was hoping someone could give me some "directions" I downloaded the Google maps for offline so I can see where I am as I hike but it would be nice to know where to go.
Specifically where to pick up the trail on the north of the "meadow".
Would be the best luck ever to find someone who has the trail gpx file from their phone/ gps but would be happy to not be walking blind.
Any info you could give would greatly appreciated

at the big iron (north) side of the meadow there is a small cairn marking the trail. The lake isn't terribly hard to find, there will probably be tracks in there already

Depending on the weather the wife and I are hoping to go Thursday.
Gotta start somewhere I'm hoping to do some more substantial hikes this summer and this is both an adventure and practice.

So this is what I am guessing after some significant google earth looking.
I was hoping to poll the audience.
1. Green all the way
2. Green, red, green
3. Green, red, blue, yellow
4. Blue, yellow
5. Blue, red, green
I would rather hear from the experienced than educated guessing but hey this is a "free" forum so let me hear what you think.

I went in green, red, blue, and one west of yellow and came out on the blue.
as long as you hit that long meadow where the red and blue meet you should be able to find the actual trail to the pond, there's a fairly well used one west of that yellow one

Would be a whole lot better with a belly boat.
But carrying it back out and up the steep section might make you question your decisions.
Interesting place, glad I went but will i go back ... probably not.

Hey, thanks for the info. I've been tempted to go up that way, but haven't as of yet.

Obviously millsboy is now trying to downplay any internet hype.
I've been there a few times.
Beautiful lake,
lots of nice fish that are hungry and naive,
the trail is a no-brainer to find and follow,
an easy hike, even with a float tube.

If you are fishing with a fly rod you better be good with a roll cast. Or bring your belly boat.
Honestly don't think it's any better than bear and you walk past bear on the way.

Sure, and from shore, use a spincast and float, great way for the kids too.
Bear is downright UGLY compared to Big Iron.
That alone is makes it worth the mild effort to get there.
And this way, more people do not go where I will be.

I've done bear pond plenty of times. The one time I tried to get to Big Iron I ended up bushwhacking down a 45 degree slope hanging onto branches for support until I thought better of it and turned around and went back. I obviously missed the trail.
